A&E Biography. In 1883, Wilde arrived in Paris and "put his aesthetic posing behind him." He wrote the play “The Duchess of Padua” for Mary Anderson; she turns it down. He goes back to London and continues to lecture. There he meets Constance Llo...yd and marries her. Apparently unaware of his homosexuality, they have two sons, Cyril in 1885 and Vyvyan in 1886. At 32 he accepts a job as an editor with a popular magazine Lady’s World. He changed the magazine’s name to The Woman’s World and solicited articles from prominent women. He starts to tutor a young boy, Robbie Ross, and they become lovers. He leads a double life. In 1890, Lippincott’s Magazine published the story “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” It shocked the Victorian public. Wilde published many essays and short stories; these secured his reputation as a serious writer. (6:50)

A&E Biography. His prison time is spent in a 10 by 13 foot cell at Redding jail. There was no toilet, writing materials, and only the Bible to read. Special arrangements were made for paper and pen in which Wilde wrote a letter to Bosie. On May 1...8, 1897, he’s released from prison. He meets up with Bosie. Constance gets mad, takes his allowance away and forbids him from seeing his children. Four months later she dies and the last possible chance to see his children. Three months later, Bosie and Wilde part ways. At 45, he had lost his will to write and his source of income. In October 1900 Wilde had an operation on his ear to repair damage from an abscess. His condition worsens and on November 30th, Wilde dies from meningitis. In 1901, Ross salvaged Wilde’s estate from bankruptcy. His writings were once again celebrated. He moved in with a friend, Frank Miles, a well known and well connected portrait painter. It was through him that Wi...lde made contact with the prestigious people. Everyone was talking about him, even the Prince of Wales. In 1880 he produced his first play, Vera; or the Nihilists, but he could not get it published. A year later he self published a book of poems. People didn’t like the book. In January 1882, he boarded the S.S. Arizona and arrived in the U. S. He came to lecture, he became a hit. Wilde had an enormous admiration for America. He left America in December 1882 he left with legitimacy as an artist and lots of money. This court case concerns the Marquess wanting to socially embarrass Wilde by throwing a bouquet of turnips on the stage after one of his ...plays. Wilde was tipped off, and Queensberry was barred from entering the theatre. In court, Wilde put on a performance to fend off the questions. They started to give evidence against Wilde, and Wilde drops the case. On April 5th, Wilde was arrested for gross indecency under the criminal law amendment. At the time of his arrest, Wilde was famous but he was deep in debt. His name was removed from play bills, shunned by London society, and his belongings auctioned off to pay his debts. Everyone told him to flee London. Video is of good quality and appropriate for high school students.
