This video is accompanied by text. "The cruelty inflicted on the natives during the Indian Wars was chronicled by Helen Hunt Jackson in her book “A Century of Dishonor,” which was published in 1881 and distributed by Jackson to every member of Congre...ss. Jackson had become incensed at the harsh treatment of Indians during a lecture by Chief Sitting Bear of the Ponca tribe in 1879. Her mission to improve Indian conditions furthered the effort to assimilate Indians onto reservations “for their own good.” By 1890, all Indian tribes were consolidated onto government-structured reservations..."

This video is accompanied by text. "Warfare was constant between whites and Indians in the late nineteenth century, as Native Americans fought to protect their land and their heritage from white encroachment. Although they had the benefit of state-of...-the-art weapons (repeating rifles obtained from fur traders), they were up against formidable U.S. forces.
As the dust settled from the Civil War, soldiers from both sides of that conflict were ready to step into another fray..."

The last video is nine minutes long and explains At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, a group of American immigrants were fighting against a group of Native Americans battling to preserve their way of life. It shows Evidence, left behind on "Last Sta...nd Hill" that indicates that "Custer's Last Stand" was over in a very short period of time. Young soldiers, desparately trying to quickly reload their slow-loading weapons, inadvertently dropped live rounds on the ground. The entire battle was likely over in 90 minutes. WARNING: THIS CLIP CONTAINS GRAPHIC DISCUSSION OF EVENTS DURING THE BATTLE OF THE LITTLE BIGHORN. IT IS DIFFICULT TO WATCH AND HEAR. PROCEED WITH CAUTION. The video does not have to be viewed to understand the battle as it just deals with the aftermath.

This 9:39 long video does an excellent job of recreating the battle using evidence from the Little Bighorn battlefield that suggests
that members of the 7th Cavalry may have retreated in panic at "Calhoun Hill."Eyewitness testimony, from the warrio...rs, indicates the cohesiveness of Custer's fighting units changed at Little Bighorn. Those observations are also confirmed by the physical evidence. At some point during the battle, Custer's troops moved from "tactical stability to tactical disintegration." Very compelling for students.

This is an exceptional video that shows how scientists try to understand what happened at the battle. Sure to hold the students' interest as it shows how the cartridge-casing information in hand, experts were able to place the location of the men, an...d their weapons, as the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The 9:30 video also shows how they learned that the federal soldiers were very young - ages 16 and 17 - and immigrants from Western Europe. Their teeth and bones tell us something about their lives. At the age of 22, some of them had arthritis - meaning they had led difficult lives.

Sitting Bull was the Lakota Indian chief under whom the Sioux tribes united in their struggle for survival on the North American Great Plains. This three minute video uses a cartoon book and music to tell his story. A good video for younger students.
