This video is accompanied by text. "The conditions in which slaves existed in the nineteenth century varied from region to region—and even from house to house. Wise slave owners recognized the value of slaves as human capital, since by 1860 slaves we...re worth approximately $1,800 each. As such, while most slaves travailed in the fields cultivating crops, dangerous work, such as roof repair, was often hired out to more expendable labor sources.
Most slaves resided in the Deep South, an area stretching from South Carolina and Georgia to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana..."

This video is accompanied by text. "During the 1850s, Americans witnessed a decade of sectional crises that threatened the very existence of the Union. Ralph Waldo Emerson was right in predicting that the Mexican Cession would reignite the explosive ...issue of slavery expansion. The newly acquired territory lay beyond the Louisiana Purchase and therefore was not part of the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Californians were clamoring for statehood, the residents of Utah and New Mexico deserved territorial governments, abolitionists wanted to prohibit slavery in Washington, and Southerners demanded a more effective fugitive slave law. The sectional battle lines were forming. Southerners took an increasingly aggressive stance in defending their “peculiar institution,” while criticism of slavery intensified in the north..." This lecture is segmented 17 minute video also has a transcript to help students follow the sophisticated presentation. The narrator compares primary source material written by Frederick Law Olmsted and published in a collection called The Cotton Kin...gdom to the letters written by a kidnapped African-American author named Solomon Northup. It would greatly help to have excerpts from these two works to help students understand the lecture better. There are other works as well and good data. The last two minutes has teaching strategies.

This one and a half hour lecture by Dr. Marcus Rediker is about the British slave trade and why it was considered essential to English prosperity. " British ships carried manufactured goods to West Africa, where they were exchanged with local rulers ...for slaves. Hundreds of these slaves were packed into the ships and carried to the West Indies -- the so-called "middle passage" -- where they were sold and the proceeds used to buy goods the ships then transported back to England. The use of quotes and photos make this a compelling lecture to mature students. The final thirty minutes is Q and A and may not be of interest to students. The first four minutes are an introduction. He relates the social movement that sought to end slavery with the Vietnam War and so some of the video may need more explanation.

This video from Dutch New York traces the history of enslaved Africans brought to the New Netherland colony by the Dutch West India Company, a major slave trading corporation. Although slaves were dispersed throughout the colony, most lived in New Am...sterdam and did a variety of jobs associated with the commercial activity of the seaport. Described as a bi-racial society by some historians, narratives of New Amsterdam do not generally recognize the crucial contributions of Africans in the development of the colony. (1:23)
