O'Sullivan, editor of the influential United States Magazine and Democratic Review, g...ave the expansionist movement its name in 1845, when he wrote that it is "the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions." Manifest Destiny was stimulated by nationalism and an idealistic vision of human perfectibility. It was America's duty to extend liberty and democratic institutions across the continent. Underlying this divine American mission was a feeling of cultural—even racial—superiority..." (Professionally produced material with scholarly ideas and arguments.)

This video is accompanied by text. "Manifest Destiny remained a driving force in the years following the war with Mexico. Throughout the nation Democrats, especially, flocked to the “Young America” movement, which championed the European revolutionar...ies of 1848 and the spread of democratic ideals around the globe. Expansionists also sought new markets and further territorial acquisitions. Southerners particularly coveted Cuba, the final remnant of Spain’s once grand empire in the Western Hemisphere, and they had an ally in the White House. Polk’s previous offer of 100 million dollars for the island had been scornfully rejected by the Spanish government..."

A short video on the buffalo or bison and their impact on America and the Native Americans. Only 600 or so we left in the early 1900s. Too short to be of real value, but a story about what happens when there are no protection or rules for killing ani...mals. This would be a good compare and contrast video to show with the killing of wolves, or as part of a lesson about why buffalo were important to the Native Americans, but not essential to the settlers. Part of a series on Indians.
