These bears spend much of their lives on trees in the forests of
Japan, India, China and some southern Russia. Smallish in size and
agile, these bears have large curved claws that help them climb or dig
burrows. They have a distinct white cresc...ent-shaped patch on their chest
and live in small family groups, eating insects, berries, fruits and
small animals. These bears usually shy away from human contact, although
if provoked or angry, they become violent and aggressive.
Intelligent and quick to learn, cubs are often taken from their
mothers and trained to dance in certain parts of India. In China, these
bears live in pain and pitiful conditions in farms where their bile is
extracted to make traditional medicine. Human greed and loss of habitat
has put these magnificent animals on the endangered list, and if the
trend continues, it won’t be long before these beautiful animals
disappear forever.
