For such a vast period of time, there is a remarkable continuity in musical styles in the Middle Ages. In order to understand them better, it is a good idea to group their distinctive features within the broad categories of monophonic and polyphonic styles.

On viol and recorder by ernst stolz. There are no surviving manuscripts containing pieces labelled as ductias. Grochieo describes the ductia as like the estampie but more regular; perhaps this refers to an estampie with verses all of the same length.... Musically speaking, it might be that an instrumental estampie with only three or four two-part verses (puncti) is a ductia (HAoM p220).
Grocheio also says (presumably about the vocal ductia): "The ductia is a melody that is light and brisk in its ascents and descents, and which is sung in carole by young men and girls, like the French song Chi encore querez amoretes. It influences the hearts of young girls and men and draws them from vanity, and is said to have power against that passion which is called love or 'eros'." (Rochefort p46)

Michael Levy plays ancient Greek melodies on his lyre. This is a short rendition of one of the precious few fragments of surviving ancient Greek music! This fragment of melody was preserved in ancient Byzantine manuscripts (Conspectus codicum:
V. V...enetus Marcianus appl. cl. VI, saec. XIII-XIV
N. Neapolitanus graecus III. C4, saec. XV
F. Florentius Ricc. 41, saec. XVI), in the unambiguous alphabetical musical notation used in ancient Greece, & the melodic fragment is catalogued as "Anonymous, Bellermann 97-104".
It is played here, on a lyre closely resembling the ancient Greek Kithara; the larger wooden lyre favoured by the professional musicians of ancient Greece(the lyre is in fact, a replica of a Jewish Temple lyre, depicted on a Jewish coin from 135CE - it is almost identical to the Kithara).
It is in the ancient Greek "Hypolydian" mode; the equivalent intervals as heard on the scale from F-F on the white notes of the piano.

This is one of motets of the french composer Guillaume de Machaut in 14th century.
Lady, I am the one who wants to endure your will.
and for as long as I may live;
but I do not believe that I will endure it for long
without dying, since you are... so harsh to me
that you want me to withdraw far away from you.
without seeing any longer the very great beauty
of your lovely body, which has so much worth.
for you are of all good ladies the best.
Alas! Thus I have the model of my death.
But the pain which I must endure will be sweet.
if I have such an expectation
that before I die I see you again, by your leave.
Lady, if ever my heart should undertake anything
of which I may have the honour and profit.
you will be the inspiration, however far away you be.
for never without you, who I love very loyally.
nor without Love, could this be undertaken.
