In this video adapted from KTOO, watch as cleanup crews return to the bays and islands of Prince William Sound, Alaska. Before the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker spill, Sleepy Bay, near the village of Chenega Bay, had been used for subsistence living by Al...aska Native peoples. Despite cleanup efforts, oil residue remains stuck between and beneath rocks. A crew also visits a tidal lagoon whose sediments had been saturated by oil and where no remediation had been done. Even after 10 years, oil residue remained imbedded on the beach. A crewmember concludes that, while the area was beginning to revive, it would be generations or longer before it returned to its pre-spill state. Closed captioning included. Run time 03:37.

This video adapted from KTOO examines a virus outbreak that affected the Pacific herring population in Alaska's Prince William Sound in 1999. Because the herring play a very important part in both the local economy and the subsistence lifestyle pract...iced by the area's Alaska Native people, community members and scientists have sought to identify the cause of the virus. One hypothesis suggests that oil from the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker spill, though not the direct cause of the virus, is a stressor that allowed the virus to take hold in the fish 10 years after the spill.

Large oil spills are not a common occurrence. So, when a tanker runs aground or collides with another vessel and releases its cargo to the sea, it's often major news — especially when it occurs near land. The images in this interactive activity from ...McDougal Littell/TERC show major oil spills and the techniques and equipment used to limit damage to coastal and other affected environments. Simulations reveal how the effects of an oil spill are influenced by variables such as the nature of the coastline, weather, and the type of oil spilled.
