Rembrandt was a master of chiaroscuro (the effects of light and light's contrasts) and it shows in these paintings. Many different works are displayed but there is no explanation about the pictures.
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 1...5, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a miller who wanted the boy to follow a learned profession, but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden to study painting. His early work was devoted to showing the lines, light and shade, and color of the people he saw about him. He was influenced by the work of Caravaggio and was fascinated by the work of many other Italian artists. When Rembrandt became established as a painter, he began to teach and continued teaching art throughout his life.

Debido a los efectos de un incendio la obra sufrió considerables daños, por lo que tuvo que ser recortada en el siglo XVIII por la parte superior y los laterales. Fue realizada en 1656 para la Sala de Anatomía... de Amsterdam y representa al doctor Joan Deijman haciendo una disección del cerebro del condenado Joris Fonteyn, al tiempo que es observado por el Maestro de la Corporación, quien sostiene el casquete cerebral.
