Using evidence of what high performing countries are doing in math and college and career readiness was the basis for creating the common core standards in math. Focus is a guiding principle with the math standards. Focus means spending more time on ...fewer things at any given grade. This video does a good job on showing how the common core standards work together to build a basic, solid foundation and how each grade level builds on each other.
