Thank You NASA Astronaut Barry Wilmore, Gov. Haslam and Congratulations Tennessee STEM students! Keep studying!! Water is the fundamental ingredient for life on Earth. Looking at our Earth from space, with its vast and deep ocean, it appears as though there is an abundance of water for our use. However, only a small portion of Earth's water is accessible for our needs. How much fresh water exists and where it is stored affects us all. This animation uses Earth science data from a variety of sensors on NASA Earth observing satellites as well as cartoons to describe Earth's water cycle and the continuous movement of water on, above and below the surface of the Earth. Note: This link leads you to several videos about our solar system. The early Earth was a much different planet than the one we know today. Ancient rocks provide evidence of the emergence of oxygen in the atmosphere and of a frozen Snowball Earth. Scientists Paul Hoffman and Andrew Knoll look at these clues to help explain the rise of complex animal life.

Earth's orbit around the Sun, together with the tilt of its axis, results in periodic climate changes around the globe known as seasons. Different locations experience different types of climate changes. For example, some places have extreme seasonal changes in temperature, while others have little temperature change but may have rainy and dry seasons. This interactive activity from the Adler Planetarium explains why Earth experiences seasons and has users properly place Earth in its orbit for particular seasons. The link includes several videos and an interactive feature.

Part 4 in a discussion on How do changes in Earth's magnetic field and ionosphere affect us? Anya Strømme – EISCAT/SRI International. She’s working with very high power radar to study the aurora borealis which are better observed at higher latitudes. She’s studying particles coming into the atmosphere, heating it, generating currents—this is where our satellites fly…this impacts tv reception, GPS, cell phones in a much more dramatic way than we can imagine. Run time 03:16.

As the Earth rotates, light from the sun hits different parts, giving us day and night. During its orbit, the Earth's tilt on its axis also causes two hemispheres to be different distances from the sun, and that gives us seasons. Learn more about the Earth's rotation with this cartoon animation from StudyJams. A short, self-checking quiz is also included with this link.

This video discuss why we have the different seasons. It discusses the axis and shows are it links the two poles. Also discusses the tilt of the Earth and how it affects the seasons of the year and the length of day and night. It shows the tilt of the Earth on the autumn and spring equinox and summer and winter solstice. Video is a good explanation of the seasons, why we have the seasons, and the tilt of the Earth. Good video for any age student. (05:53)

Witness the destructive power of earthquakes, from home videos taken during a tremor. Video goes inside the Earth to show how an earthquake starts. Earth is covered by plates, when the plates are moved by the heat of the inner Earth, they grind against each other along lines called faults. When the plates motion is blocked stress builds up, finally the fault gives way. The released energy moves through the Earth called seismic waves. Seismic waves are measured by scientists on seismographs. Only about a thousand of these waves is strong enough to cause damage. About 10,000 people die each year in earthquakes. The strongest earthquake to date in North America measured 9.2, and was in Alaska on March 28, 1964. Video is good quality and has good information. Good for elementary grade and middle school students. (02:30)
