Although not the first successful gasoline powered automobile, Henry Ford's Quadricycle in 1896 started a chain of events launching a new industrial age.He built his vehicle as a motorized, four-wheel bicycle (quadricycle) while others building vehicles at the time were taking horse buggys and adding engines to them.Ford went on to found the Ford Motor Company where he revolutionalized manufacturing. Until Ford, most products including cars, were made one at a time. Ford initiated an assembly line process where each person performs a part in assembling a vehicle. Then it goes on to the next in line until the vehicle is completed. (02.25)

Encyclopedia Britannica Films, Inc. produced this Immigration video, which shows a brief history of immigration in the U.S. until 1946. This video clearly shows how important immigrants were in the formulation of our nation. (The term "Negro" is used.) This film makes no mention of the Native-Americans that were already in America and makes no mention of how African-Americans arrived here. Interesting period film. (10:23)

Western settlers’ assumptions of an endless, bountiful frontier were
tested when they moved to the Great Plains and attempted to cultivate the unfamiliar, arid landscape. This experience led to the rise of populist politics, which championed farmers’ and industrial workers’
critique of political and economic powers.

This interactive map explores the concentration camp, Auschwitz, the scene of one of the worst crimes in human history. This is where more than a million men, women and children, most of them
Jews, were murdered by the Nazis during the course of World War Two. It developed in step with fundamental Nazi values, constantly changing in response to the German war effort ebbed and flowed. As the map demonstrates, the Auschwitz complex served as a concentration camp and an industrial centre for the exploitation of brutal slave labour - but it was the perpetration of genocide that became its purpose. The animation shows the sites where German's massacres occurred and much more. An excellent site to provide depth to the study of the Holocaust and World War Two as well as Europe's history.

This video is accompanies by text. "The new industrial age and the resulting growth of the U.S. economy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries affected nearly everyone in America. Industrial combination and concentration became the norm, with huge trusts appearing in almost every industry. The workplace was changing as machines became common and the demand for unskilled workers brought new groups into the workforce, including immigrants, women, and children. By 1920, nearly 20 percent of all manufacturing workers were women, and 13 percent of all textile workers were younger than 16 years old..."

This is a video accompanied by text. "The population explosion and modern inventions turned the city, once friendly and familiar, into an impersonal megalopolis that segregated Americans by race, ethnicity, and social class. City residents discovered that with growth and advancement came grim consequences. Between 1866 and 1915, more than 25 million foreigners left their homelands for the United States. Millions of newcomers had little money, a limited understanding of the English language, and no friends, family, or acquaintances to greet them upon their arrival. Unlike the highly literate immigrants who bought land and started businesses in America decades earlier, the new immigrants were largely illiterate and willing to accept low paying industrial jobs in the city..."

The Hydrologic Cycle (or the Water Cycle) is a cycle of evaporation, evapotranspiration, precipitation and infiltration. (02:18)
The sun heats bodies of waters such as oceans and lakes, which causes the water to evaporate and form water vapor. Water vapor is also transpired from trees and soil. The collection of water vapor condenses to form clouds, which move around the globe by air currents. With the right conditions, clouds precipitate; some of the water absorbs into the ground to form an aquifer, and some runs into lakes and streams. This is a continuous cycle, however, human settlement has put a damper on the cycle. For example, industrial waste and toxins can pollute air and water, the building of dams disrupts the natural flow of water, the building of roads cause erosion, to name a few. In order to prevent further harm to the environment, we should consider the consequences of our actions to create a more eco-friendly environment for our future.

Series host Angie visits a lumberjack show in Hayward and wonders how that type of work evolved from a job to a tourist attraction. This prompts her to investigate the ways in which Wisconsin jobs have changed throughout history and how those changes have affected workers. As Angie explores changes in the lumbering industry, from early logging to industrial manufacturing to forest-dependent tourism, she also learns how these specific changes were reflected in Wisconsin's broader economy. This progression of changes helps students understand the relationships among natural resources, the economy, and daily life. (14:00)

The brutal World War of 1914-1918 left much of Europe devastated and destitute. The gruesome totals were more than eight million dead, as both sides in the conflict lost the better part of an entire generation of males. The Allies had accumulated vast national debts of seemingly unmanageable proportions. In contrast, the United States suffered comparatively few combat deaths and emerged from the war with a significantly stronger economy. The profits from arms sales to the Allies were in the billions of dollars, and in the first decade after the war America accounted for nearly half of the world's industrial output.

In which John Green teaches you about founding father and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is a somewhat controversial figure in American history, largely because he, like pretty much all humans, was a big bundle of contradictions. Jefferson was a slave-owner who couldn't decide if he liked slavery. He advocated for small government, but expanded federal power more than either of his presidential predecessor. He also idealized the independent farmer and demonized manufacturing, but put policies in place that would expand industrial production in the US. Controversy may ensue as we try to deviate a bit from the standard hagiography/slander story that usually told about old TJ. John explores Jefferson's election, his policies, and some of the new nation's (literally and figuratively) formative events that took place during Jefferson's presidency. In addition to all this, Napoleon drops in to sell Louisiana, John Marshall sets the course of the Supreme Court, and John Adams gets called a tiny tyrant. (13:19)
