Called treacherous, deluded, out-of-touch, insane, Lenin might have been a minor historical footnote but for the Russian Revolution, which catapulted him into the headlines of the 20th century.

The Revolution ends as the British and Americans sign the Articles of
Peace; and Benjamin Franklin and John Adams are present to negotiate the 1783 Treaty of Paris. Also: the Constitutional Convention in 1787. This video explains why the French were involved and goes through much of the history of the war. This is a long video, 45 minutes, that also deals with the creation of the Constitution. A very good review of what is happening in this time. A timeline and a list of names and events would help the students recall and follow the video.

John Green teaches you about the American Revolution and the American Revolutionary War, which it turns out were two different things. John goes over the issues and events that precipitated rebellion in Britain's American colonies, and he also explores the ideas that laid the groundwork for the new American democracy. Find out how the tax bill from the Seven Years War fomented an uprising, how the Enlightenment influenced the Founding Fathers, and who were the winners and losers in this conflict.(hint: many of the people living in the Colonies ended up losers) The Revolution purportedly brought freedom and equality to the Thirteen Colonies, but they weren't equally distributed. This is a video presentation accompanied by text. "The political revolution in the late eighteenth century that resulted in the Articles of Confederation also caused a social revolution. Riots and social conflict marked the Revolutionary era in America. The Revolution brought the concept of equality into mainstream American thought. Many colonists seized the opportunity to introduce social reform as they created their state constitutions.
The spirit of equality was represented in many ways. Property qualifications for voting were lowered, admitting the overwhelming majority of white males. However, governmental officeholders often had to meet a higher landholding requirement. In Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North Carolina seats in the state legislature were reapportioned so the backcountry western districts were given fair representation..."

China, because of its large population and abundant natural resources, has played a significant role in international affairs since the eighteenth century. However, during its long war with Japan during World War II, China was severely weakened. The Chinese suffered over two million casualties, in addition to significant damage to private property and the nation's infrastructure. The Chinese morale and standard of living were greatly diminished, and China was ripe for a revolution. Mao Tse Tung rose to power through the revolution with the support of the Russian Communist government. This was alarming to the U.S.

CAUTION: A three-letter word is used in the first couple of minutes. Although, it is not necessarily a curse word--some may be offended. PLEASE PREVIEW BEFORE WATCHING.) John Green teaches you about the roots of the American Revolution. The Revolution did not start on July 4, 1776. The Revolutionary War didn't start on July 4 either. (as you remember, I'm sure, the Revolution and the Revolutionary War are not the same thing) The shooting started on April 19, 1775, at Lexington and/or Concord, MA. Or the shooting started with the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. At least we can pin down the Declaration of Independence to July 4, 1776. Except that most of the signers didn't sign until August 2. The point is that the beginning of the Revolution is very complex and hard to pin down. John will lead you through the bramble of taxes, royal decrees, acts of parliament, colonial responses, and various congresses. We'll start with the end of the Seven Years War, and the bill that the British ran up fighting the war. This led to taxes on colonial trade, which led to colonists demanding representation, which led to revolution. It all seems very complicated, but Crash Course will get you through it in about 12 minutes. (12:19)

The steam engine propelled the world into a new age of transportation. It was said to have been inspired by a boiling kettle pot, but man had really been aware of the power of steam for quite some time. Thomas Newcomen created the first practical steam engine for pumping water. Later on, his idea was modified in the 17th century and would revolutionize the world of transportation. (02:50)
