Balloon Brain: Designing a Helmet
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by PBS
As humans, we thankfully have more going for us than the balloon brains depicted in this video segment adapted from ZOOM. Still, the failed efforts of some of the ZOOM cast members to design adequate protection for their balloon brains illustrates the importance of wearing a proper helmet and protecting your own brain whenever you skate, roller blade, ski, or ride a bike. The video/experiment could be used with a lesson about forces, helmet safety, or the skull and brain. Closed captioning included. (03:06)

Painters Careers Overview
From YouTube, produced by CityTownInfo
This two minute video does a good job of reviewing what a painter must know and they types of painters. A good career day video. The teacher could add to this the importance of math to painting and have the students do problem solving using the amount of paint needed to cover a certain amount of square footage.

two types of jobs for painters. There are construction painters who work for
constructors that construct new buildings and usually work outdoors. There are
also maintenance painters who work for owners of structures already built and
usually work indoors. Many painters work of ladders carrying buckets of paint,
so they must be careful and focused. If someone wants to become a painter, they
must be in good condition, since this requires a lot of work. Since some
painters work with mixtures that give out bad fumes, they must wear protective
for their own safety. For this job, it requires that you know how to handle with
rollers and paint sprayers and be able to mix paint and match
them.

"Un-American" Activities
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "As fighting during World War II raged on, Allied leaders Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill grew suspicious of Joseph Stalin's postwar plans for the Soviet Union. They came to realize that the Russian dictator could not be trusted and cautiously evaluated how wartime strategies might affect postwar outcomes. Roosevelt, and later President Harry Truman, worried that the spread of communism would threaten the safety of the United States and all democratic countries. By the time the U.S. entered the Korean War in 1950, America was entangled in a second Red Scare so intense that it overshadowed the Red Scare of 1919-1920..."

In this video segment adapted from the American Experience "Freedom Riders" Web site, watch newsreel footage and interviews and see archival photos to explore one Southern politician's opposition to ending illegal discrimination and segregation against African Americans in the early 1960s. Alabama Governor John Patterson would not honor Attorney General Robert Kennedy's request to ensure the safety of the Freedom Riders, and even refused to take a phone call from President John Kennedy while white mobs were firebombing buses and beating civil rights activists in Patterson's home state. Years later, Patterson expressed his regret for not taking the president's call and for not doing "what should have been done". (2:45)
