The United States Enters the War
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This is a video about WWII and the moment when the United States was engaged in an undeclared naval war with Germany. President Roosevelt ordered the navy to "shoot on sight" any German submarines after an American destroyer, the Greer, was attacked near Iceland. In October, the Kearny was torpedoed killing 11, and the destroyer Reuben James was sunk—more than 100 sailors perished. Congress amended the Neutrality Act in November, to permit trade with belligerents and the arming of merchant vessels. Seven merchant ships were sunk by U-boats before the United States formally entered the war. With the escalating naval action in the Atlantic, it is somewhat ironic that the United States was pulled into the Second World War due to events in the Pacific.

Migration Westward after Reconstruction
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "Prior to the Civil War, most English settlers and their descendants chose to live along the Atlantic Coast. However, the Pacific Coast was also being settled, which would lead to the development of the Great Plains as the two coasts spread toward the middle of America.
Atlantic settlers referred to the Great Plains and the Pacific Coast as the “Great West.” A less-optimistic name for this region was the “Great American Desert,” so-named because of a lack of available water sources and soil that did not respond to Atlantic farming methods..." (Professionally produced material with scholarly ideas and arguments.)

The Dickins Medal for Heroic Wartime Animals
From YouTube, produced by Chris Smith
This student made video shows some of the heroic animals that served in war times to save human lives. The Dickins Medal goes to such animals. This is an ideal video to show to students to motivate them to make their own videos as well as learn about the relationship between man and animals. They will probably be surprised at the number of pigeons honors and why.  NOTE: the music can be distracting and there are a few spelling errors.  (01:54)

Delaware Flag and Anthem
From YouTube, produced by Five Star Flags

The flag was adopted on July 24, 1913, has a background of colonial blue surrounding a diamond of buff color in which the coat of arms of the state is placed. Below the diamond are the words "December 7, 1787," which is the date Delaware first ratified the United States constitution. The shades of buff and colonial blue represent those of the uniform of General George Washington. Inside the diamond, the flag recognizes the importance of commerce{the ship}and agriculture{wheat, corn, the ox and the farmer}to the state. Tribute is also paid to the revolutionary war soldiers. The words in the ribbon banner read Liberty and Independence.  The state anthem is “Our Delaware” written by George B. Hynson and composed by M. S. Brown.  With this video you can see the flag and hear the anthem.  Good for all students.

The Economy during the US Civil War
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "The Civil War affected northern and southern economies differently. When the war began, the north, with its large factories and well-established companies, generated a great deal of the country’s business. After the first volleys of battle, the north experienced a slight depression due to the uncertainty of the war and the loss of southern business associations. However, after the initial shock passed, the northern economy flourished. The federal government moved quickly to plan for its financial future. Congress increased excise taxes on tobacco and alcohol, tariffs were created to protect manufactures from foreign competition, and an income tax was introduced for the first time in the history of the nation..."

Within the thousands of camps he placed those he considered sub-human, including Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, criminals, communists, prisoners of war, Jehovah’s Witnesses, intellectuals and the mentally ill. None of these millions of captives were given any form of judicial process, and were used as slave-laborers before being massacred. Join WatchMojo.com as we learn about the Nazis’ use of concentration and extermination camps during World War II. (4:18)
