A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni-Read Aloud
From YouTube, produced by Dragonfly Books
Every animal has a color of its own. "Parrots are green, elephants are gray, pigs are pink." But chameleons change color wherever they go. "On lemons they are yellow. In the heather they are purple." One chameleon is not pleased with his changeable appearance. He thinks, "If I remain on a leaf, I shall be green forever, and so I too will have a color of my own." Of course, what he doesn't take into account is the changes wrought by autumn, and soon the green chameleon is yellow, then red, and then tumbled to the ground for the long black winter night. It isn't until he befriends another older, wiser chameleon that our hero begins to find inner peace, even as his outer surface is transformed again and again. This is a great teaching resource as it helps to bring literary characters to life (2:33).

"Bear Snores On" written by Karma Wilson Read-Aloud
From YouTube, produced by YouTube
In this video, siblings read "Bear Snores On". Students will enjoy this delightful story and the expression used by the children. On a cold windy night, an itty-bitty mouse "pitter-pat, tip-toe, creep-crawls" into a sleeping bear's cozy lair, looking for relief from the bitter winter weather. Soon he is joined by a veritable menagerie of woodland animals, and the party begins. Popping corn, brewing tea, tweeting, and chatting, the critters enjoy themselves thoroughly while the bear slumbers through it all. Until, that is, an errant pepper flake from the simmering stew wakes him up with a giant sneeze. As the bear goes from ferocious snarls and rumbles to pitiful whimpers, his uninvited guests realize what the problem is.You've snuck in my lair
and you've all had fun!
But me? I was sleeping
and...
I have had none!
Not to worry. Mouse knows just what to do. This is a great resource for the classroom and for reading and sharing at home. (6:14)

Trail of Tears
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by WGBH Educational Foundation
In this video segment adapted from American Experience: "We Shall Remain," reenactments help tell the story of how the Cherokee people were forced from their lands in the southeast. The U.S. government initially promised the Cherokee and other Native American tribes that if they could assimilate into European Americans lifestyles, they would be considered equals. But a new movement in the late 1820s, supported by President Andrew Jackson, promoted removal of Native Americans from the eastern U.S. The Indian Removal Act, passed in 1830, called for the tribes to leave peacefully. Feeling that removal from their own lands was not an option, the vast majority of people stayed. When the deadline to leave passed, federal troops and state militia forcefully assembled the Cherokee people, letting them take nothing but the clothes on their backs, and made them march an 850-mile trek to new lands. Many died on this march, known as the Trail of Tears, which lasted through one of the hardest winters the region had ever experienced. (5:24)

The Mayflower
From history.com, produced by History Channel
This video was about the events that led to the Mayflower and the tough voyage across the sea to get to the New World. When winter came there, many died because they did not know how to survive. Though later, the Pilgrims made the Plymouth colony and it was the start of United States. Fast paced. Makes an excellent example of what students can do with a comic book, although this one was obviously done by a professional.

'Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crab Cakes Later)' Written by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard and Read Aloud
From YouTube, produced by Sandpiper
Two young girls discover how memories and stories can be found in unlikely places. On Sunday afternoon, two little girls visit their Great-great-aunt Flossie, whose house is full of books, pictures, and "boxes and boxes and boxes of HATS," each of which has a story to go along with it. A woolly winter hat still smelling faintly of smoke was worn by Aunt Flossie when, as a child, she witnessed the great Baltimore fire. The dark blue one with a red feather was perched on her head when, as a young woman, she watched a parade welcoming home black veterans of World War I. These reminiscences paint an interesting portrait of regional African-American history, but the highlight of the book is the girls' favorite story, which features themselves and the day the wind blew Aunt Flossie's best Sunday hat into the river. Based on Howard's memories of her own feisty, 98-year-old aunt, this is a lyrical, entertaining story that rings with authenticity. This is a wonderful literary resource to help build background knowledge in the classroom. (09:35)
