This short video gives excellent real life, close up footage of Robin chicks and fledglings in their natural environment. The robin (Erithacus rubecula) is undoubtedly one of the most dearly loved backyard birds. It is instantly recognizable due to the rusty-red breast. The sexes are very similar, but juveniles lack the red breast and are mottled with browns and buffs. The robin is one of the few birds to sing throughout the winter; its melodious, liquid song is a further feature that has endeared this species to the public. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (Less Than 2 Minutes)

Watch this to hear Katherine Applegate, author of the hit young adult series, Animorphs, talk about 'Home of the Brave,' her first stand-alone novel for children. In this author essay, Applegate talks about what she most hopes readers will remember about her book, and introduces us to a friendly cow. Applegate's novel, perfect for readers in the middle grades, tells the story of Kek. Kek comes from Africa where he lived with his mother, father, and brother. But only he and his mother have survived. Now she's missing, and Kek has been sent to a new home. In America, he sees snow for the first time, and feels its sting. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the winter—cold and unkind. But slowly he makes friends: a girl in foster care, an old woman with a rundown farm, and a sweet, sad cow that reminds Kek of home. As he waits for word of his mother's fate, Kek weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories, and belief in his new country. (01:21)

In this video segment from WILD TV, learn about 14-year-old Abigail Harden and her fascination with worms. She describes them as her first pets. She estimates there are about 50,000 worms in her local community garden. By eating organic matter, worms provide rich nutrients through their feces to help the plants grow. As they move through the soil they also provide aeration and drainage for the roots of the plants. Spreading fruit pulp around the plants to feed the worms draws them to the plants. The worms reproduce rapidly and hibernate in the winter by burrowing deep into the ground. (3:38)

This short video gives excellent real life footage of Mountain Hares in their natural environment. Students will enjoy the close up views of these beautiful creatures. The Mountain Hare has a lighter build than the brown hare, and is easily distinguished by its tail, which is completely white throughout the year, whereas in the brown hare the tail has a black upper surface. The ears are tipped with black, and the coat is brown in summer, turning white during winter. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (1:55)

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, at the request of President Thomas Jefferson, led an expedition to survey the land West of the Missipppi, known as Louisana Territory, that had been purchased from France in 1803. Lewis, Clark, and the rest of their expedition began their journey near St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804. This group, often called the Corps of Discovery by historians, faced nearly every obstacle and hardship imaginable on their trip. They braved dangerous waters and harsh weather and endured hunger, illness, injury, and fatigue. During their first winter, they recieved help and guidance from Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian. In this Biography Channel full length video, learn more about pioneering American explorers, Meriwether Lewis & William Clark. (43:54)

This could be from a Sci-Fi mutant insect invasion movie - but it's actually 100% nature! These are actual photos and video documenting the pupation process of the Velda Pine Moth (Coloradia velda), a member of the Saturniidae family of giant silk moths. This pupation process normally happens a few inches underground, in a small chamber constructed in the soft earth by the caterpillar. After spending the winter in this underground cocoon chamber, it develops, emerges from the pupal case and claws its way to he surface. Once there, it expands its wings and begins the short (2-7 days) adult phase of its life where the primary function is reproduction. This is a great way to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (2:49)

Botswana's Okavango Delta and the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are two ends of a 360-mile round trip zebra migration, the second longest on Earth. In this animation, shades of red show dry areas, green represents vegetation, and the dots show GPS tracked zebras. The zebras begin at the Okavango Delta in late September. After the dry Southern hemisphere winter, November rains signal it is time to begin their two-week journey to the Salt Pans. The zebras feast on nutrient-rich grasses all summer, and return to the Delta as the rain peters out in April. (01:50)
