What was in Lincoln's Pockets?
From YouTube, produced by History Channel
When Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865, he was carrying two pairs of spectacles and a lens polisher, a pocketknife, a watch fob, a linen handkerchief, a brown leather wallet containing a five-dollar Confederate note, and nine newspaper clippings, including several favorable to the president and his policies. Given to his son Robert Todd upon Lincoln's death, these everyday items, which through association with tragedy had become like relics, were kept in the Lincoln family for more than seventy years. Because it is quite unusual for the Library to keep personal artifacts among its holdings, they were not put on display until 1976 when then Librarian of Congress Daniel Boorstin thought their exposure would humanize a man who had become "mythologically engulfed." Theories of Democracy
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "In his 1863 Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as "government of the people, by the people, for the people." These words have come to mean different things to different people and have sparked debate over whether the U.S. government really responds to the will of its citizens.
Four theories of democracy have taken shape over time, each addressing the questions of who holds power and influences public policy. The Traditional Theory of Democracy promotes majority rule without violating minority rights, maintaining the willingness to compromise, and recognizing the worth and dignity of all people..."

From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "The presidential election of 1864 transpired at a time when the country was divided, both geographically and politically, by war. The outcome of the election would ultimately be decided by swiftly changing political tides.
The majority of Republicans backed the current president, Abraham Lincoln; but Lincoln had a significant number of detractors even within his own party. They accused Lincoln of being too eager to compromise, lacking conviction, and of offering up ill-timed jokes, putting Lincoln’s renomination at first in doubt..." (Professionally produced material with scholarly ideas and arguments.)

American Civil War - Beginning and End
From awesomestories.com, produced by Florentine Films
Soon after Abraham Lincoln became America’s 16th president, the country split apart when the South seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. (12:33)

Days after the South surrendered, at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, President Lincoln was assassinated.  He had lived just long enough to see his fondest wish fulfilled.  His country, bruised and battered though it was, would survive as a single nation.

This clip, from The Civil War: A Ken Burns Film, shows where the war essentially began (and where it ended) -  in the backyard (and then in the parlor) of the same man, Wilmer McLean. (12:33)
