The foundation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, was sparked by a violent two-day race riot in Abraham Lincoln's birthplace of Springfield, Illinois in 1908. After minority-owned businesses were destroyed and African Americans were driven from their homes, a group of liberal-thinkers gathered in the hopes of forming a civil rights organization. The National Negro Committee was founded on February 12th, 1909 to commemorate Lincoln’s 100th birthday, and soon it became the NAACP. In this video, WatchMojo.com learns more about the history of the NAACP. (4:14)

It is probably no accident that Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was a life-long American patriot. He was the nephew of Edward Everett, renowned orator and statesman. And his father, Nathan Hale, was the namesake and nephew of Nathan Hale, executed by the British for espionage during the Revolutionary War and famous for his last words: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”As a Unitarian minister in Boston, as Chaplain in the United States Senate, and as a prolific writer of essays and short fiction, Edward Hale was a devoted activist, championing especially the causes of the abolition of slavery and the advancement of public education. “The Man without a Country,” his most famous story, was published anonymously in the Atlantic Monthly, during the terrible days of Civil War, in 1863, the same year that President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.Watch editors Amy A. Kass and Leon R. Kass converse with guest host Wilfred McClay (University of Tennessee--Chattanooga) about the story. John Green teaches how the Civil War played a large part in making the United States the country that it is today. He covers some of the key ways in which Abraham Lincoln influenced the outcome of the war, and how the lack of foreign intervention also helped the Union win the war. John also covers the technology that made the Civil War different than previous wars. New weapons helped to influence the outcomes of battles, but photography influenced how the public at large perceived the war. In addition, John gets into the long term effects of the war, including the federalization and unification of the United States. All this plus homesteading, land grant universities, railroads, federal currency, and taxes. (10:54)

The bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern "insurrection." (01:00)

When Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860, the South decided to leave the union and created the Confederate States of America in fear that the Southern states would lose their slaves. This resulted in the greatest loss of life in American history. South Carolina started to leave the Union first and eventually they wrote their own constitution. This video does not have much depth, but does show the political climate of the time.

Raised in poverty, uneducated, a working class figure whose political ethos was "my way or the highway," Andrew Johnson's surprising rise to the Oval Office upon Abraham Lincoln's assassination was followed by a torturous relationship with Congress and the first impeachment of a U.S. president. Mo Rocca looks back at the life of the Southern Democrat who was one of America's most unfortunate chief executives. (06:21)

The suspicion that John Wilkes Booth had acted as part of a conspiracy of Southern sympathizers in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln reignited Northern rancor and helped doom Lincoln's plans for a relatively generous peace. This was one of the earliest "Wanted" posters to bear a fugitive's photograph. Hastily-assembled and issued during the few days that Booth was at large, this poster incorporated carte-de-visite photographs of the conspirators, including one of Booth that had been produced as a publicity shot for the actor. On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC. Much has been written about Booth's motivations: that he was a Confederate sympathizer, or suffering from professional jealousy, or simply wanted attention. Regardless, when Booth left Ford's Theater that night, he had indelibly changed the course of history, slaying a man now considered one of the nation's greatest presidents. (11:38)
