This three-minute video helps to show how the North thought it would be a short war. The first was the Battle of Full Run; It resulted in huge losses on both sides. It was anything but quick. Lincoln introduced the Emancipation Proclamation, which banned slavery in the Confederate states and changed the rationale for the war. A good overview.

Twenty-four thousand miles of railroad replenishes troops and supplies for the North and delivers disaster to the South. Lincoln uses the fact that the North has way more railroad networks than the South. The railroad changes the way that the Civil War is fought and the speed at which troops can get to the various places that they need to go. (4:34)

Unfortunately, even had the organization been instituted earlier, it wouldn’t have helped. The Secret Service in the beginning had no part in protecting the President, but rather were tasked with cutting down on the amazing amount of counterfeit money circulated in the United States at the time (hence why until March of 2003 they were a branch of the U.S. Department of the Treasury). It is estimated that about 1/3 of the U.S. currency in circulation was counterfeit when Lincoln signed the piece of legislature that would establish the Secret Service. (07:49)

Did you know that the iconic ”Lincoln Bible” was actually not Lincoln’s personal Bible, but was that used at his inaugural in 1861? Lincoln traveled to Washington, DC separately from his family, and under threat of assassination, his luggage and Bible were left behind. The chief justice provided an 1853 KJV, and Lincoln swore the oath of office on this Bible. It is what is now known as the “Lincoln Bible.” (01:00)
