Exploring Geography Through African History
From learner.org, produced by Annenberg Media/Learner.org
Lisa Farrow is a seventh–grade world cultures teacher at Shiloh Middle
School in a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. Ms. Farrow's lesson provides her students with an understanding of African history and geography. After creating a personal timeline, the students create a historical timeline of Africa, focusing on the Bantu migrations, the rise of Islam, the West African trading empires, the Turkish empire, the slave trade, and European colonialism. Students take an active role in group work as they create maps and captions that define each period. Ms. Farrow concentrates on the importance of the trading empires and their connection to Africa's history as a whole.

Empires in Africa
From howstuffworks.com, produced by Discovery
This two-minute video explores two of the ancient African Empires. These two empires, Mali and Ghana were great trade cities that
lie on the Niger River, but were destroyed by African Muslims.  Mali rose after the downfall of Ghana. It was controlled by a Muslim ruler who made that religion the official state religion. These two empires were known for establishing gold and salt trade routes. This video is best used with a map of the area. Let the video run and several other short ones follow and add depth to the study of Mali and the area.  They are about a minute long and well worth viewing.

Wild Africa: The Mega Flyover
From dailymotion.com, produced by National Geographic
This video really starts around 2:20. It is based on a seven-month,
transcontinental journey from the southern-most tip of Africa to the
northern shores of Morocco to show an attempt by Mike Fay, explorer. It is a 44 minute video, but there are commercials in it. The images are excellent. I recommend you start at eight minutes. A good video to use to teach students about wildlife, conservation, the geography of Africa, and the idea of commitment.

Malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by PBS
This video segment adapted from Rx for Survival examines malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa, a disease that kills more than one million children there each year. It explains how a deadly parasite, a member of the genus Plasmodium, enters the bloodstream via a mosquito bite and how it multiplies once inside host red blood cells. The video reveals that drug counterfeiting has increased malaria's death toll, and that newer drugs, while more effective than older ones, are too expensive for most Africans to acquire. The video also highlights one simple and low-cost solution—bed nets—that can be used to combat disease transmission. Closed-captioning included. (04:31)
