This one-and-a-half hour lecture by Dr. Marcus Rediker is about the British slave trade and why it was considered essential to English prosperity. " British ships carried manufactured goods to West Africa, where they were exchanged with local rulers for slaves. Hundreds of these slaves were packed into the ships and carried to the West Indies -- the so-called "middle passage" -- where they were sold and the proceeds used to buy goods the ships then transported back to England. The use of quotes and photos make this a compelling lecture to mature students. The final thirty minutes is Q and A and may not be of interest to students. The first four minutes are an introduction. He relates the social movement that sought to end slavery with the Vietnam War and so some of the video may need more explanation. (01:35:19)

Few sights are as majestic as monarch butterflies roosting in trees or flocks of whooper swans migrating across northern skies. Seasonal changes propel a wide variety of creatures to begin migrations - sometimes on an epic scale - to feeding, mating and breeding grounds. This video segment from Nature introduces the story of the seasonal migrations of four different species from across the planet: the wildebeests of East Africa, monarch butterflies of Mexico, sockeye salmon of North America, and whooper swans of Europe. In this video segment adapted from Interactive NOVA, mountain-climber Rob Taylor gives a harrowing account of his failed attempt to scale the peak of Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro. Because it is a free-standing mountain — the tallest in the world — climbers must ascend from the base through several climate zones before reaching the arctic summit. After being rescued from a fall near the summit, Taylor thought his worst problems were behind him when an unanticipated consequence of his descent to warmer temperatures presented an equally dangerous challenge. Closed captioning included. (04:42)

This part of the documentary show civil war in Rhodesia and how civilians are involved. In 1980 Britain's Empire in Africa is over. Back in the 1960, the video shows how Caribbean people were called to England to work. However, there is resistance in society. They resent black immigrants. Most immigrants are offered poor jobs regardless of their training. Later, policies do not admit any more blacks. In the 1960s, Asian immigrants arrive. Again, there is resistance from the population. There is footage of the protests. (09:31)

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Palm Springs or any other windmills, but were afraid to ask. KESQ-TV's Gil Diaz goes behind the locked gates to reveal the "Secrets of the Windmills". Video gives specifics of the wind mill, 228 feet tall and blades nearly 100 feet long. There are about 4,800 wind mills, they were first installed in 1981, they installed as an experiment by NASA. Where they are installed is the second most consistently windy place in the world, the first is in Africa. The wind turbines generate enough 140,000 to 190,000 homes. The cost of one wind turbine is about $1.5 million. People who live near-by do not like them, but comment that they are a benefit. Somewhat poor quality of video but information is good. Good for middle elementary grade students. (03:29)
