Global Population Growth
From YouTube, produced by TED
The world's population will grow to 9 billion over the next 50 years -- and only by raising the living standards of the poorest can we check population growth. This is the paradoxical answer that Hans Rosling unveils at TED@Cannes using colorful new data display technology (you'll see). As a doctor and researcher, Hans Rosling identified a new paralytic disease induced by hunger in rural Africa. Now he looks at the bigger picture of social and economic development.  (10:15)

Maasai Culture
From dailymotion.com, produced by Explore
This is a one-minute video about the Maasai, a tribal group of East Africa, known for their tall stature, signature red clothing, and highly energetic and athletic style of dancing. Both Tanzanian and Kenyan government have encouraged abandonment of the traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, but they have successfully maintained many age-old customs. Very brief, but a good introduction.  (01:05)

CIA vs. Anti-U.S. Government - Cold War
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "Once he was elected to a second term, Eisenhower's stance on communism began to resemble the policies of the Truman administration—the U.S. government would concentrate on blocking the growth of communism rather than try to destroy it. The administration tolerated Communist nations in eastern Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, but forces—primarily the CIA—would be dispatched to deal with anti-American governments in the Third World. Of utmost interest to Eisenhower were political disturbances in nations considered prime markets for U.S. products and sources of essential raw materials, including Latin America, Asia, and Africa..."  ( Video is well done and professionally produced.)

Katherine Applegate on her book 'Home of the Brave'
From YouTube, produced by MacmillanChildrens
Watch this to hear Katherine Applegate, author of the hit young adult series, Animorphs, talk about 'Home of the Brave,' her first stand-alone novel for children. In this author essay, Applegate talks about what she most hopes readers will remember about her book, and introduces us to a friendly cow. Applegate's novel, perfect for readers in the middle grades, tells the story of Kek. Kek comes from Africa where he lived with his mother, father, and brother. But only he and his mother have survived. Now she's missing, and Kek has been sent to a new home. In America, he sees snow for the first time, and feels its sting. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the winter—cold and unkind. But slowly he makes friends: a girl in foster care, an old woman with a rundown farm, and a sweet, sad cow that reminds Kek of home. As he waits for word of his mother's fate, Kek weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories, and belief in his new country. (01:21)
