VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945: The War is Over
From Vimeo
A three minute video of Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. Students will probably laugh and get a kick out of the outfits, but if you can talk to them about what was going through the minds of these members of the armed forces...going home; alive. Perhaps they could do an interview with some WW Two veterans. There is some scenes of drinking, but very light hearted. And, this is also a primary resource and you could explain the difference between this and "Hollywood" productions. Jimmy Durante is singing I''ll be seeing you, so you may wish to ask them why this song was used. Very rare footage.

The Best Part of Everything: A Modern Family
From snagfilms.com, produced by Jes Therkelsen
A family’s evolution as the children face the real world and the parents prepare for an empty nest and retirement.Weaved together by an assemblage of aesthetically and emotionally rich interviews, an extraordinary array of archival material and vérité footage, The Best Part of Everything explores an American family facing their hopes, dreams, ambitions, and regrets as the 20-something children face the real world and the parents prepare for an empty nest and retirement.Jes Therkelsen’s highly personal and poignant documentary weaves an inventive story through celebrations and struggles from childhood to adulthood, from innocence to experience yet delicately balances happiness with regret, sacrifice with optimism, and obligation with hope. The story is a universal yet intimate portrait of the American family, not scripted, not rehearsed, not immune to the conflicts and contradictions underlying family life and its rituals. The subjects of this poignant and graceful study of family history and memory become alive with the conflicts and affections that bind a family together. (34:19)

Learn About Chinese New Year: Rituals, Food, Family (Feb. 1st-15th)
From YouTube, produced by WatchMojo.com
Chinese New Year is based on a myth that involved a monster eating crops and people from Chinese villages. The population was finally able to drive the monster away due to his fear of the color red, and by leaving food on their doorsteps, and so what followed was jubilant celebration. While that myth is not as relevant to celebrations today, that doesn’t make present-day Chinese New Year any less remarkable. This holiday is seen as a time to gather with family and partake in the ancient rituals associated with the festival. (03:22)
