Civil Rights and the 1950s: Crash Course US History #39
From YouTube, produced by crashcourse
John Green teaches you about the early days of the Civil Rights movement. By way of providing context for this, John also talks a bit about wider America in the 1950s. The 1950s are a deeply nostalgic period for many Americans, but there is more than a little idealizing going on here. The 1950s were a time of economic expansion, new technologies, and a growing middle class. America was becoming a suburban nation thanks to cookie-cutter housing developments like Levittown. While the white working class saw their wages and status improve, the proverbial rising tide wasn't lifting all proverbial ships. A lot of people were excluded from the prosperity of the 1950s. Segregation in housing and education made for some serious inequality for African Americans. As a result, the Civil Rights movement was born. John will talk about the early careers of Martin Luther King, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and even Earl Warren. He'll teach you about Brown v Board of Education, and the lesser known Mendez vs. Westminster, the Montgomery Bus Boycott. (11:57)

The Civil Rights Cases
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by WNET.ORG Properties LLC
In 1883, the Supreme Court struck down the Civil Rights Cases of 1875. As the nation grew weary of Reconstruction, the Supreme Court followed suit, ruling that while the Fourteenth Amendment protected an individual’s rights in places of public accommodation, it would not protect citizens from the discriminatory behavior of individuals. This video explores the case that led to the Court’s first great dissent, its first great dissenter, and the end of Reconstruction. (6:40)

Starting with the right to vote, and then laboring to integrate schools and other aspects of everyday life, the Civil Rights Movement made huge strides over a century of work. While the crusade may never truly be over, many considered the election of the country’s first African American President to be a turning point in the battle. History of the NAACP and Civil Rights
From watchmojo.com, produced by WatchMojo
The foundation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, was sparked by a violent two-day race riot in Abraham Lincoln's birthplace of Springfield, Illinois in 1908. After minority-owned businesses were destroyed and African Americans were driven from their homes, a group of liberal-thinkers gathered in the hopes of forming a civil rights organization. The National Negro Committee was founded on February 12th, 1909 to commemorate Lincoln’s 100th birthday, and soon it became the NAACP. In this video, WatchMojo.com learns more about the history of the NAACP. (4:14)
