This video segment, taken from archival news footage, explores the ideology of Malcolm X, an outspoken civil rights leader in the 1960s who advocated black nationalism and separation from white society. He argued that integration represented an adoption of white values and white culture and that, instead, African Americans needed to embrace their own culture, communities, and institutions independent of the white world. Although a prosperous African-American middle class had emerged in Atlanta by the early 1900s, it was understood by both whites and blacks that Atlanta was a tense and highly segregated city. In 1906, on the heels of the Thomas Dixon play The Clansmen, newspapers began falsely reporting assaults of white women by black men, leading to the Atlanta Riot. This segment from The Rise and Fall of Jim Crowdescribes the events leading up to the riot, and its impact on the black civil rights leaders Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois and Walter White. In a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin. Beware of the ad at beginning of this five minute video about Malcolm X. It moves rapidly and uses many excerpts of speeches that he gave and why he changed his name to X. He was in opposition to the Civil Rights movement and his comments about President Kennedy. A good video to gain insights into his beliefs. Three Nation of Islam member were convicted of his murder.

In this video segment adapted from American Experience: "Freedom Riders," view newsreel footage, archival photos, and interviews to explore how the Freedom Rides of 1961 brought about the end of racial segregation in interstate transportation. The Freedom Riders, aware that their nonviolent protest would elicit violence from some Southerners attempting to enforce local segregation laws, were determined to continue their protest even in the face of possible arrest. A series of events involving the U.S. attorney general, a U.S. senator, the governor of Mississippi, and a federal agency put an end to discriminatory practices in public transportation. This initial, unambiguous victory for the Civil Rights Movement paved the way for further progress. (5:51)

In this video segment from the American Experience: "Freedom Riders" Web site, watch interviews and newsreel footage and see archival photos to learn how Mahatma Gandhi, the leader in the struggle for an independent India, inspired and influenced those engaged in the struggle to end racial discrimination in the United States. Gandhi's use of nonviolence had allowed the people of India to win independence from Great Britain in 1947. While Gandhi declined an invitation from American civil rights leaders to become directly involved in the U.S. struggle for equal rights, his encouragement persuaded them that the tactic of nonviolence also held great potential in a struggle for the rights of a minority.
