In today’s episode of Crash Course Zoology we’re going to solve some phylogenetic mysteries! There are so many more questions we have yet to answer in Zoology so grab some fossils, fire up the DNA sequences, and bring your best hypothesis as we try to figure out where all the baby eels are, explain why spiders seem so lonely, and decide once and for all if horseshoe crabs are arachnids! Brazil's right wing president Jair Bolsonaro says non-governmental organisations may have intentionally started wildfires in the Amazon rainforest to embarrass him and his government. He offered no evidence to back up his claimAccording to Brazil's space agency, a record number of almost 73,000 forest fires were recorded in the country already this year. The Amazon forest produces one-fifth of the world's oxygen and absorbs one-quarter of all the CO2 taken in by the earth's forests. Losing the Amazon rainforest could mean losing one of the world's greatest natural defenses against climate change. (05.40)

Home video showing many fire tornados. The video shows a line of fire and how the wind makes the tornadoes with the fire. A fire tornado or whirls often occur during bush fires. Vertical rotating columns of fire form when the air currents and temperature are just right, creating a tornado-like effect. They can be as high as 30 to 200 ft tall and up to 10 ft wide but only last a few minutes, although some can last for longer if the winds are strong. There is no narration. (00:31)

As of August 20th, more than 74,000 fires have been recorded across the Brazilian Amazon. That’s nearly double the total number of fires in 2018. So, what happened? Environmental groups blame Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, who has indicated that protecting the rainforest is not a priority. They say Bolsonaro has emboldened ranchers and farmers to set fire to forests to acquire more land, now with impunity. Scientists warn that the results may be devastating. They say the Amazon is near a tipping point, beyond which the forest could turn into a dry savannah. (04:02)

As firefighters struggle to contain vast Arctic wildfires in Siberia, some Russian officials say they've had to give up their efforts in a few of the most remote areas. In the hard-hit Krasnoyarsk region, residents are choking on smoke from the forest fires. Greenpeace meanwhile has sounded the alarm over the environmental impact of the wildfires, calling them a climate catastrophe. (06.07)

Volcanoes 101

Today we know volcanoes are openings or vents to the interior of the planet. About 1,500 volcanoes around the world are considered active, about 90% rest in the Ring of Fire, a band circling the Pacific Ocean. While the Earth’s surface looks peaceful the crust is made up of slabs of rock that constantly shift, where the plates interact, volcanoes often form. Friction from shifting plates melts the Earth’s crust, causing rock beneath the crust to liquefy. This magma then becomes a volcano by erupting through rifts in the plates. Not all lava is the same. Volcanoes can be deadly, but it can also be good, it created 80% of Earth’s surface and the air we breathe, rich soil for farming, and some countries harness the heat to create geothermal energy. Video is very interesting and good quality. Good for elementary grade and middle school students.

This simple video is narrated and apparently illustrated by a young child. Prometheus was a Titan God who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to human mortals. Zeus punished him, by having him bound to a rock while a great bird ate his liver every day (only to have it grow back to be eaten again the next day). Zeus, still angry, then sent Pandora (the first woman), to further punish humans. Pandora had a box she was not supposed to open. She opens it anyway, and when she does a black cloud escapes releasing many evils upon the world: sickness, suffering, greed, war etc. The only good thing inside the box was beautiful hope! Two stories summarized in less than a minute and a half. (01:17)
