Time To Fight A Fire - Animated Storybook - (Community Helpers)
From storyplace.org, produced by Story Place
This read-aloud online storybook is about firefighters. The fire truck's lights are animated and they offer a sing-a-long to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus." There is an arrow button to move from the song to the next page in the story. This is a good resource to help build a literacy rich environment in the early childhood classroom. It would work well in conjunction with a thematic unit on community workers.

Freedom and Individuality: "To Build a Fire" by Jack London
From vimeo.com, produced by What So Proudly We Hail
Jack London, like the unnamed man described in the story “To Build a Fire,” lived on the edge. Born in 1876, he died a short forty years later. As a young man, he was a full-fledged participant in the Yukon Gold Rush of 1897. Like many others at the time, London made the incredibly arduous journey by foot and handcrafted boat from Dyea in Alaska over Chilkoot Pass—a three-quarter-mile 45-degree-angled obstacle course—and eventually down the Yukon River into the Northwest Territories. The only gold he brought back, however, was an experience that he would mine for gems of literature for much of his writing life, as evidenced in his well known novels like "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," as well as in “To Build a Fire” (1908), all of which draw on the places he saw and the people he met during those hope-filled and brutal times in the Northwestern Yukon territory.Watch editors Amy A. Kass and Leon R. Kass converse with guest host William Schambra (Hudson Institute) about the story. For more about Jack London and "To Build a Fire," visit whatsoproudlywehail.org/curriculum/the-meaning-of-america/freedom-and-individuality.

Egg in the Bottle - Air Pressure - SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
From YouTube, produced by TrickyFun Nation
Should be done by a teacher in a classroom, not at home. Put a burning piece of a paper or other flammable material into a bottle with a neck slightly narrower than an egg. Burning paper will warm up and expand the...expand the air in the bottle and molecules of air will leak out of the bottle. Put an egg -- boiled and peeled, on the neck of the bottle. When the fire goes out, the air in the bottle cools down. Atmospheric pressure in the bottle decreases. As a result of different atmospheric pressures, higher outer pressure pushes the egg into the bottle. (02:21)

This Day in History, April 12th: The Civil War Begins
From history.com, produced by history channel
The bloodiest four years in American history begin when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard open fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. On April 13, U.S. Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort. Two days later, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to quell the Southern "insurrection." (01:00)

Traditional Hambone
From YouTube
(01:30) Video Dry Branch Fire Squad founding member Ron Thomason performs traditional Hambone at the Gettysburg Bluegrass festival, 2008. This is where the phrase "Hamming it up" originated. People would Hambone, call it hamboning then for short hamming, then hamming it up would be competing with another to do more moves. You were called a master Ham if you had it down, or others might say, "What a Ham, or he's a Ham..."

Animated Maps: California Wildfires from 1910-2019
From YouTube, produced by Esri
Wildfires are a fact of life in California—and not a new one. Living in the state has always meant forging an uneasy alliance with the natural cycle of fires. What has changed in recent years is their frequency and ferocity, largely driven by climate change. In 2018, California experienced the Mendocino Complex Fire and the Camp Fire—respectively the largest and most destructive wildfires in the state’s history—but there were over 50 others that year. Collectively, they consumed nearly 1.6 million acres, enough space to hold five cities the size of Los Angeles.(01:46)
