Two specialists work on basic theatre skills with children of various ages, and use theatre education as a gateway to other kinds of learning. At Lusher Alternative Elementary School in New Orleans, Amanda Newberry’s lesson in improvisation with a third–grade class stimulates students’ imagination, heightens language and listening skills, and encourages critical thinking. At Barney Ford Elementary School in Denver, George Jackson teaches basic movement skills to a first–grade class, invites fourth–graders to take center stage as they explore a script, and works with fifth–graders to create masks that reveal inner feelings.

The Stamp Act
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
Video accompanied with text dealing with the Stamp Act. "The peace treaty that ended the French and Indian War in 1763 eliminated New France as a military threat to the British colonists, and marked the start of the march toward American independence. The war effort, and British Prime Minister William Pitt’s decision to retain large numbers of troops in the American colonies after the conflict, doubled Great Britain’s national debt. In an effort to raise revenues, Parliament enforced the Navigation Acts, which listed specific commodities that could be shipped only within the English empire. However, Britain’s attempt to make the colonists abide by the shipping regulations generated little revenue due to an increase in smuggling. Pitt’s successor, George Grenville, took a different route to force the colonists to pay what he believed was their fair share for the services of the British army stationed in America.  (04:15)

Media Smarts: Kids Learn How to Navigate the Multimedia World
From edutopia.org, produced by Edutopia
Students in grades 3-12 spend eight-1/2 hours daily using media.  (Generation M., Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010)  Filmmaker/George Lucas Educational Foundation chair George Lucas thinks it's time to change "English" class into "Communication" class.  National Association for Media Literacy Education members believe, "By learning to skillfully interpret, analyze, and create messages, media literacy empowers people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of messages using image, language, and sound."  In the See, Hear, Feel Film program(Jacob Burns Film Center, NY) 3rd graders learn how various camera angles heighten dramatic impact and how emotional content is conveyed without words. Then they compose short scenes they act out.  4th graders write, storyboard, direct, and shoot animated stop-motion films.

Courage and Self-Sacrifice: "Chamberlain" by Michael Shaara and Patton's Speech to the Third Army
From vimeo.com, produced by What So Proudly We Hail
Courage is a virtue difficult to cultivate, especially among self-interested citizens oriented toward the pursuit of their own happiness. At the extreme, why shouldn’t I prefer the preservation of myself to the preservation of my nation? If there is both a natural and cultural tendency to cowardice, how is courage to be cultivated?Although courage usually grows only through repeated acts in the face of fear and danger, inspiring speeches can rally groups of men on the eve of battle. These selections—excerpted from "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara (1928–1988), an account of the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War and General George S. Patton’s Speech to the Third Army—exemplify two such inspiriting speeches, in some ways similar, in some ways different.Watch editors Amy A. Kass and Leon R. Kass converse with guest host Eliot A. Cohen (Johns Hopkins SAIS) about Michael Shaara's "Chamberlain" (from "The Killer Angels") and George S. Patton's Speech to the Third Army.
