This is an entertaining instructional video that elementary school teachers can show to their students to help them better understand the process of revising. Viewers will learn what revising means, the goals of revising, how to revise, and how revising differs from editing. "The video features two students simulating a typical day in the classroom, and they are working on a Writing Workshop project. I filmed the video with these children last summer and debuted it in the classroom this Fall. Watching the two kids in the video work together to revise a piece of writing had a wonderful effect on my students'
ability to cooperate, listen to one another's suggestions, use their time well, and make valuable changes to their initial drafts. (05:55)

In 1609 when Henry Hudson, an English captain working for the Dutch, took a voyage on his ship, the Half Moon, he was seeking the most efficient route from Europe to Asia. While finding a trade route to the exotic markets of India and China was his goal, he instead discovered what would later be known as the bay of New York, the Hudson River and modern day Albany, laying the foundation for one of the most important settlements of early America. Highlights a crucial cornerstone of character—perseverance—by showing real kids who achieved amazing results for themselves and their communities. Children need perseverance to master new skills in school, extracurricular activities, and life in general, but like any other character trait, it requires practice. Kids can develop perseverance by studying hard for tests, practicing a musical instrument at home, and refusing to give up when obstacles get in the way of their goals. Teaches that it's okay to fail. Both successful and unsuccessful people fail, but the successful ones learn from their mistakes and keep on trying. (04:09)

This is one of three videos a team and I did to try using video to convey prime number ideas to middle school students. This one takes a more traditional approach, with me at a whiteboard explaining what primes are. A goal was to jazz it up, in terms of sound effects and the like, just enough to get the message across. This video is part of the video collection at NextVista.org (http://nextvista.org), a proud partner of Curriki.
