This is a four-minute video about the blind and deaf American author, Helen Keller. It tells how her teacher, Anne Sullivan, worked with her. The students can listen to her speak and how she learned to "hear" what people said by putting her hands on the mouth of a speaker. This newsreel footage has been described for the blind and captioned for the deaf. Helen Keller's loss of vision and hearing in infancy made comprehension of the outside world next to impossible—or so it seemed. When teacher Anne Sullivan agreed to work with Keller, that world opened up, especially when Keller comprehended the function and purpose of language. Keller and Sullivan appear in this newsreel footage from 1928, in which Sullivan explains and then demonstrates the methodology used to teach Keller language, most elements of which are still used worldwide with students who are deaf-blind. When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, the top 400 meters (1,300 feet) of the volcano disappeared within minutes. The blast area covered more than 390 square kilometers (150 square miles) and sent thousands of tons of ash into the upper atmosphere. The state flag and the state seal are similar. Passed in 1923, Washington state law describes the flag as having dark green bunting with a state seal in the center. It is the only state flag that is green. It is also the only state flag with a picture of a president.
