On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signs Medicare, a health insurance program for elderly Americans, into law. At the bill-signing ceremony, which took place at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, former President Harry S. Truman was enrolled as Medicare's first beneficiary and received the first Medicare card. Johnson wanted to recognize Truman, who, in 1945, had become the first president to propose national health insurance, an initiative that was opposed at the time by Congress. (01:00)

(Match 7th, the date given in the video, was the date the video was posted to YouTube.) (NOTE: Wikipedia has his death at 49, not 39.) RTV's "Catholic Saints and Feast Days" features the great Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Auinas. How can any Protestant ignore the fact that this greatest of Christian theologians was...well, CATHOLIC! He defended and explained all Seven Sacraments, was a champion of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the Mass, and the Papacy? Martin Luther knew better than Thomas Aquinas? (02:18)

Understanding how we define normalcy--the life of a twelve-year-old autistic boy.GEORGE (2000) directed by Corra and Grahame Weinbren is described by Amy Taubin in The Village Voice as “an exceptionally intelligent and moving documentary that explores Corra’s twelve year old autistic son George, who uses his own video camera to make a movie within the movie. In fact, the film is about how we define normalcy.” GEORGE had its American theatrical premiere at The Screening Room, New York City and was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Gaga Film Festival, Berlin, Germany and aired on HBO in July 2000.(1:26:24)

This read aloud is Miss Mary Mack adapted by Mary Ann Hoberman and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott. Miss Mary is a perky young lady who primps at a pink-skirted vanity table while a newspaper touts "Elephant escapes zoo." The additional verses tell a fuller story of Miss Mary, recounting the elephant's exploits after he jumps the fence and lands in a yard filled with Fourth of July picnickers, and the friendship that ensues between him and the girl. There is a play button to start story and a pause button on each page. Each word is highlighted as the speaker reads. This is a wonderful resource to help build a literacy rich environment in the early childhood classroom. It would be beneficial for struggling readers and/or for special education students.
