CAUTION: A three-letter word is used in the first couple of minutes. Although, it is not necessarily a curse word--some may be offended. PLEASE PREVIEW BEFORE WATCHING.) John Green teaches you about the roots of the American Revolution. The Revolution did not start on July 4, 1776. The Revolutionary War didn't start on July 4 either. (as you remember, I'm sure, the Revolution and the Revolutionary War are not the same thing) The shooting started on April 19, 1775, at Lexington and/or Concord, MA. Or the shooting started with the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. At least we can pin down the Declaration of Independence to July 4, 1776. Except that most of the signers didn't sign until August 2. The point is that the beginning of the Revolution is very complex and hard to pin down. John will lead you through the bramble of taxes, royal decrees, acts of parliament, colonial responses, and various congresses. We'll start with the end of the Seven Years War, and the bill that the British ran up fighting the war. This led to taxes on colonial trade, which led to colonists demanding representation, which led to revolution. It all seems very complicated, but Crash Course will get you through it in about 12 minutes. (12:19)

Coming of age at the dawn of the twentieth century, Charles Ives saw the halcyon days of his youth fading fast. Not willing to let them go, he invented a striking new musical language to enshrine the feelings and ideals of a simpler time. But many, shocked by passages like the “fireworks” in ‘Fourth of July,’ found his new-fangled methods at odds with the memories he was trying to preserve. Did Ives go too far? Or did he succeed in turning his memories into music?

This clip is raw from Camera E-8 on the launch umbilical tower/mobile launch program of Apollo 11, July 16, 1969. This is an HD transfer from the 16mm original. The camera is running at 500 fps, making the total clip of over 8 minutes represent just 30 seconds of actual time. Narration is provided by Mark Gray (me), Executive Producer for Spacecraft Films. (08:41)
NOTE: Most of the language used in the narration is advanced, but this footage is incredible! Younger students will need to understand the significance of Apollo 11 and that this is the actual footage in HD and slowed down.

Born July 28th, 1954 in Sabaneta, Venezuela, Hugo Chavez was directly exposed to the poverty in Venezuela at a young age. He developed his ideas for political and social change while at military school and eventually amassed many followers. Though his attempt at a revolutionary coup d'etat attempt failed, Chavez continued to have supporters and was eventually elected president. His left wing and socialist leadership has made him a very controversial political figure. In this WatchMojo.com video, we take a look at the life and rule of Hugo Chavez. (6:03)

This 4:30 long video is a recreation of the feelings at the end of the first day of battle at Gettysburg - July 1, 1863 - Union lines had collapsed and General Robert E. Lee, their leader, wanted to push forward.Lee's second-in-command - General Longstreet - thought the best move, at that point in the battle, was to have Confederate troops stop fighting. Longstreet reminded Lee that Confederate strategy was defensive (not offensive) in nature - even though the battle of Gettysburg itself was taking place in Union, not Confederate, territory. The video explains what happened next and who won the tactical battle. Good insights for students to understand and adds depth to their textbook coverage of this event.

I wished on the Moon --Billie Holiday 1935
20 year old Billie Holiday sings in a first session with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra on July 2 1935 in New York. Next to Teddy on piano the All Star Band consists of Benny Goodman clarinet, Roy Eldridge trumpet, Ben Webster tenor sax, John Truehart guitar, John Kirby bass and Cozy Cole drums. Jazz promotor John Hammond heard Billie for the first time in New York's Monette club in 1933 and wrote in Melody Maker: "Billie although only 18, she weighs over 200 lbs, is incredibly beautiful, and sings as well as anybody I ever heard". Hammond told Benny Goodman, and the two went to this Monette club. Both were impressed and it was the start of Billie's career

In this short film, we speak with key voices and experts in the headwaters regionIn July 2010, Alexandra Cousteau’s Expedition Blue Planet: North America explored the headwaters of the Colorado River to investigate how this mighty river is over allocated from the moment its waters touch the ground high in the Rocky Mountains, where the continental divide rises like spine and demarcates the Mississippi watershed that lies to the East from the Colorado watershed that falls to the West.
Today we find that this iconic river still means life for the 20 million people that live in its basin, just as it did for the Native Americans, just as it did for the settlers who drove West and claimed it as their own. But the truth is, the minute it touches the ground we’ve allocated every drop and too often we’re not even judicious in how we use it.
In this short film, we speak with key voices and experts in the headwaters region and chart the path of the river’s flow to investigate water use and management issues in the American West. Here, it’s all about what’s downstream. (07:42)
