School House Rock-The Check's In the Mail
From gamequarium.org, produced by Schoolhouse Rock
In this School House Rock video, students will learn how checks are used in the banking system. Some of the lyrics include the following: The check's in the mail
The check is in the mail
And it ought to be there Tuesday without fail
If you have got a bill to pay
Or something you need to buy
Just write the check and send it off in the mail. Millions of Americans go out every day
With a checkbook in their purse
They might have a little cash to pay for their lunch
And a little to get home on the bus
But if they suddenly decide to make a purchase or shop
They whip it out and write out the exact amount
With some I.D., then they sign it
And they walk out with the stuff
That they paid for with their checking account. This is a good teaching resource for teaching students about money and financial responsibility. (3:01)

Amistad Captives - Sold at Auction
From awesomestories.com
WARNING:  THIS 8-MINUTE VIDEO RECREATES A KIDNAPPING SCENE AND SHOWS HOW AFRICANS WERE TAKEN FROM THEIR HOMES AND SOLD AS SLAVES.  IT NAY NOT BE EASY TO WATCH AND MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN.  After they were illegally kidnapped from their families, Africans were sent to the “new world” on ships characterized by unspeakably bad conditions.  People were sold, at auction, as slaves.

In 1839, fifty-three such individuals were part of a sale in Havana, Cuba.  Purchased by two Spaniards, the Africans were transferred to a ship called La Amistad.  They would soon be caught-up in a legal battle which further pushed America toward civil war. This video does an excellent job showing the the brutality and ordeal of the slave trade as well as the uprising. A preview is a must.

Nineteenth Century Banking
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
Video accompanied by text. "In the early 1800s, the United States government did not print paper money but instead minted gold and silver coins called specie. The value of these coins was determined by the value of the metal in the coins themselves. People wanted a safe place to keep their savings of gold and silver coins, so they stored them in banks, which had strong vaults and other measures of security. The bank would give the depositor a receipt, or banknote, as a claim against the gold or silver that had been deposited. When depositors wanted to withdraw money, they would take the banknote to the bank and exchange it for coins. People did not always have to withdraw their money to make purchases, because often sellers would accept the banknotes as payment. Thus banknotes circulated from hand to hand while the gold and silver that backed them, or guaranteed their value, remained in the bank..."

Renaissance - Birth of a Dynasty, Part 5
From awesomestories.com, produced by PBS
NOTE:  This clip contains a segment on fourteenth-century art and its creative processes.  Sculptures of the human body (and their descriptions) may be offensive to some people, especially children. Proceed with caution.

The Pope opens a significant line of credit, with the Medici bank, resulting in huge wealth for Cosimo and his family.

Medici art patronage, thus, becomes a political strategy - a key fact leading to an explosion of art development unequaled (at the time) anywhere else in Europe.

Artists, during the early Renaissance, needed patrons (like Cosimo de Medici) because there was no wider art market.  People did not go to art galleries, to purchase paintings, like they do today.  Cosimo understood that - and he also understood that artists needed time to themselves, away from the demand of their work.
