It's time to talk about one of the most awesome scientists that has ever been awesome: Marie Curie. She figured out ways to get an amazing education despite the limitations of her homeland, discovered some really important answers to the question "what is stuff?", and she helped other people (like her husband) complete their own studies and discoveries. Marie Curie was a physicist and chemist, most famous for her work in radiation. Also notable are her two Nobel Prizes (one in physics and one in chemistry)! She discovered two new elements, revolutionized our understanding of the atom, and even invented mobile x-ray units for use at the battlefront in WWI. Marie Curie was a remarkable woman, whose contributions to science still impact us today. (08:10)

Marie Skłodowska Curie, born Maria Salomea Skłodowska (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934), was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields. She was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris. (06:14)

In this Pick of the Week video, teenage students will be introduced to "Queen of Hearts" by Martha Brooks. Teenager Marie-Claire is not a happy camper. And can you blame her? All she wants is to be normal—to have a boyfriend, and maybe the opportunity for a little teenage rebellion. Instead, she's stuck in a tuberculosis sanatorium, where she must "chase the cure" with the other invalids. With no privacy, painful treatments, and days of unending boredom, it seems like Marie-Claire doesn't have much to hope for. Little does she know that in the same place where she finds heartache and loss, she'll also discover her first true love. This is a great resource to entice and to encourage middle school readers. Louis Pasteur (December 27, 1822 – September 28, 1895) was a French microbiologist and chemist. He and his wife, Marie, are best known for their experiments supporting the germ theory of disease, and he is also known for his vaccinations, most notably the first vaccine against rabies. He made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, including the asymmetry (different shapes) of crystals. He is also well known for his way of keeping milk and wine from going sour for longer periods of time. That process is called pasteurization. It is when the milk and or wine is put under about 161 Fahrenheit (72 Celsius) for fifteen seconds. (03:50)

Chevalier de Saint-Georges, born Joseph Bologne, was widely considered to be one of the most accomplished men in Europe during his lifetime, with a laundry list of talents, ranging from genius violinist to Europe’s greatest swordsman. He is known as the “Black Mozart” - but to be honest, if you learn enough about him, you may even consider Mozart to be the “White Joseph Bologne.” Joseph was literally around for every major cultural event in France in the 1700s - he was in the center of the revolution and the fall of the monarchy, he may have been the inspiration for the book The Three Musketeers, he was friends with the Prince of Wales, tutored Marie Antoinette in piano, and may have aided in writing some of Mozart’s music. Let’s learn about his life and history and then we will take a look at some recreations of his face. (16:21)

This is the 1st lesson in the series, "Radioactivity." This lesson traces the historical journey leading up to the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel and the isolation of radioactive isotopes by the Curies. It also considers why some isotopes undergo decay and examine alpha, beta and gamma decay. Examples of nuclear reactions are also given to show the relationship between parent and daughter atoms.
