This is a very short clip (01:20), but it allows the viewer to take a closer look at the flare that erupted on March 6, 2012. This movie of the March 6, 2012 X5.4 flare was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The waves move at over a million miles per hour, zipping from one side of the sun to the other in about an hour. The movie shows two distinct waves. The first seems to spread in all directions; the second is narrower, moving toward the southeast. (01:20)

Many people dream of traveling through space and perhaps even encountering extraterrestrial life. Evidence for higher life forms is lacking, although single-celled organisms are conceivable. Fungi, bacteria, and viruses have taken up residence on the international space station, the ISS, and are getting along frighteningly well. But microbes follow humans—not the other way around. When it comes to Jupiter, how can one miss the mighty great red spot? The largest planet in the solar system hosts the biggest and the most violent storm known to date. We don't really know for how long it has been there on Jupiter, but it has been raging since Robert Hooke first discovered it through his telescope back in 1664. (08:55)
