By the mid-nineteenth century, the American economy that had been based on local commerce and small-scale farming was maturing into a dynamic, wide-reaching capitalist marketplace. As the industrial revolution in the northeast altered the economy and intensified the process of urbanization, an agricultural empire began to emerge in the west, and westward expansion began. In this video you will learn about westward expansion and it's trials and tribulations. (Video is of high quality with slides and narration.)

On Saturday, August 9, 2008, the Man Mound Archeological Site was rededicated by the organizations that were responsible for its preservation: the Sauk County Historical Society, the Wisconsin Archaeological Society and the Wisconsin Federation of Women's Clubs. "Only one effigy mound in the shape of a human being has survived nearly intact. It is located near the base of a high hill in Man Mound County Park, to the northeast of Baraboo. Probably built more than 1,000 years ago, this huge mound is in the form of a walking man who has horns or is wearing a horned headdress, such as a buffalo-horn headdress, which is characteristically worn by Native American shamans in more recent times." Video done by John Wanserski. The majority of this video is set to music, some Native American Indian music plays well into the movie.

This melodrama was filmed during the actual construction of a skyscraper in New York City, and includes several scenes of real work crews:. The story involves a construction foreman who fires one of his crew for fighting, which leads the disgruntled employee to steal. He causes the blame to be put on the foreman, who is finally exonerated when the thief is exposed. All of this conflict is woven in and around the actual construction of the building as the work is in progress. There is even one scene of a hand-to-hand fight between the foreman and the villain that takes place on the unprotected ledge of the steel framework of the building. Some New York City landmarks seen in the film include Union Square (between Broadway and 4th Avenue, 14th-17th Street), and the Everett House, opposite the northeast corner of the square at 17th St. and 4th Avenue.

(03:52) Lately, the International Space Station has been flying through geomagnetic storms, giving astronauts an close-up view of the aurora borealis just outside their windows. These videos were taken by the crew of Expedition 30 on board the International Space Station. First, get an introduction into the beauty of aurorae.
1st Segment:
The sequence of shots was taken March 3, 2012 from 17:59:48 to 18:16:25 GMT, on a pass from eastern Kenya, near the Indian Ocean, to the South Indian Ocean, east of the Kerguelen Islands. This video begins as the ISS travels southeast from eastern Africa over the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The first land we see is that of the Mauritius and Reunion Islands east of Madagascar. The pass continues over the Indian Ocean, where there are heavy clouds blocking the view of the water. Finally, the Aurora Australis begins to appear, as well as a faded view of the Milky Way.
2nd Segment:
The sequence of shots was taken March 4, 2012 from 17:19:17 to 17:27:10 GMT, on a pass over the South Indian Ocean. This video again focuses on the Aurora Australis as the ISS passes over the South Indian Ocean, from northeast of the Kerugelen Islands to south of Australia. The streaks of the aurora are very visible and active in this video, as the ISS passes right over the green lights.
3rd Segment:
The sequence of shots was taken March 10, 2012 from 14:49:58 to 15:05:37 GMT, on a pass from the South Indian Ocean to southeast New Zealand. This video mainly focuses on the Aurora Australis over the Southern Hemisphere. As the ISS traveled southeast and then northeast, the crew captured the bands of the Aurora Australis as the Milky Way made an appearance in the star field.

This video segment from WILD TV investigates wild parrots that live in Brooklyn in New York City. There are various theories as to how these parrots have come to live wild in the city. Parrots typically live in the much warmer climates of South America, and it must be difficult for them to survive the colder winter temperatures in the Northeast United States. Scientists are observing the parrots and recording where they nest, what they eat and any other behaviors. Neighbors say the green parrots are loud, but generally the people enjoy having them around. A documentary about lettercutting, in both monumental inscriptions and on gravestones. The filmmakers were given complete access over a two year period to the work of the craftsmen of the John Stevens Shop in Newport, Rhode Island, the oldest business in the United States still in continuous operation in the same colonial building. It chronicles the work of John ‘Fud’ Benson, then the owner and principal designer, and, arguably, one of the most accomplished letter cutters in the world.
