The sensation of "weightlessness" that orbiting astronauts experience on their missions would seem to make their tasks almost effortless. However, as Newton's third law of motion suggests, working in space can be physically demanding. This video segment, adapted from NOVA, illustrates the significance of Newton's law to space-walking astronauts and the engineers who design their spacecrafts. (04:50)

We think of space as a silent place. But, physicist Janna Levin says the universe has a soundtrack -- a sonic composition that records some of the most dramatic events in outer space. (Black holes, for instance, bang on spacetime like a drum.) An accessible and mind-expanding soundwalk through the universe. (17:43)

Where should NASA go to look for intelligent life on Mars? To get to the truth, journalists say follow the money. Astronomers say follow the water. Dr. Michio Kaku says "if you were a Martian on Mars three billion years ago when Mars was probably a lush environment with liquid water oceans—and you realized that the water was escaping to the icecaps, escaping into outer space or going into the permafrost," then you would "probably go either into outer space to leave Mars or drill into the permafrost or go into the polar icecaps. So I think that's what NASA is going to do next. (02:46)

Watch an interview with Katie Van Camp, author of the new picture book Harry and Horsie. Harry and Horsie was inspired by her time as a nanny for David Letterman's son. One night, when he can't sleep, he climbs to the shelf that holds his new bubble-making machine. He creates bubbles that begin to surround objects in his room and float them out the window. That's not a problem until one of the diaphanous orbs picks up Horsie and silently drifts into outer space. Harry's adventure in rescuing his beloved stuffed animal is enhanced by retro-style, computer-generated illustrations in beige, blue, and black with touches of red and gold. This is a great resource to encourage young readers at home and at school. (1:32)

Katherine Johnson, the trailblazing NASA mathematician whose work helped propel the United States into outer space, has died at the age of 101. Her contributions included calculating rocket trajectories and earth orbits by hand during the space agency's early years. President Obama awarded Johnson the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2015. Her story, and the stories of other African-American women who contributed to NASA's early success in the space race, became the subject of the movie "Hidden Figures".(00:49)
