In the Wake of Lewis and Clark
From YouTube, produced by National Geographic
Beginning as a trickle in the high alpine meadows of western Canada, the Columbia River flows through great, forested mountains and down desert canyons. Joined by the Snake River, it rolls with increasing force through fertile farmlands, past snow-covered volcanoes, and finally knifes through a mountain range to complete a 1,200-mile journey to the wide sea. This is the grand gateway to the West, pioneered by Lewis and Clark, roamed by fur traders, and traversed by courageous settlers as they forged their way over the Oregon Trail. Our comfortable, small ships, designed for exploring these historic waterways. Their size and maneuverability enable you to travel from the mouth of the Columbia all the way inland to Idaho, more than 450 miles upstream — a voyage impossible for a big ship.  Video is good for elementary and middle school students.

Apple Tree Life Cycle Animation
From YouTube, produced by LifeforBeginners
This short video is an animation of an apple's journey from the tree to the ground, decaying, sprouting and growing into an apple tree over time. The sun shines, the rain falls, and a tropical season cycle is shown (no snow). There is no narration, so an educator showing this to young students would have to supplement the video with information. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (01:48)

Festive Science! A Holiday Chem Lab
From Vimeo, produced by ACS
This video from ACS features Diane Bunce, Ph.D, professor of Chemistry at Catholic University of America. She demonstrates several holiday activities and experiments, first addressing the procedures for each activity and then discussing the chemistry concept behind it. The activities include: snow globes - viscosity and density,  bounding snow balls - polymers and cross-linking, and holiday cards - polar and non-polar reactions. These "holiday" activities could easily be adapted to other times of the year.  Although the activities seem appropriate for elementary level, the explanations given by Dr. Bunce are certainly for upper level chemistry classes. "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" Written by Judi Barrett, Read-Aloud
From YouTube, produced by Atheneum Books
The tiny town of Chewandswallow was very much like any other tiny town except for its weather which came three times a day, at breakfast, lunch and dinner. But, it never rained rain and it never snowed snow and it never blew just wind. It rained things like soup and juice. It snowed things like mashed potatoes. Sometimes the wind blew in storms of hamburgers. Life for the townspeople was delicious until the weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger and so did the portions. Chewandswallow was plagues by damaging floods and storms of huge food. The town was a mess and the people feared for their lives. Something had to be done, and in a hurry. This read aloud is a great resource to help build literary skills in the classroom. (08:37)

What Is A Watershed
From discoveryeducation.com, produced by Discovery Education
From the mountains to the coast, this series focuses on the water system known as the Connecticut River, one of 10 designated American Heritage Rivers. Filmed in the ecosystem and supported by The Connecticut River Education Initiative. Water. About three feet of it falls as rain and snow in this part of New England every year. In cities and other developed areas, much of it runs off rapidly, down into catch basins and storm drains, where it races through pipes and discharges into our rivers. In forested areas, it's a different story. Just where this rainwater flows depends on topography. With its hills and valleys, the earth is divided into watersheds or river basins, each one isolated from the next.

How Do Avalanches Form?
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by PBS
There are two basic elements to an avalanche: a steep, snow-covered slope and a trigger that causes a weak layer within the snow pack to collapse. This video segment adapted from NOVA reveals that the shape of the ice crystals of snowflakes within a snow pack is also a critical factor. How well the crystals bond together determines how strong a snow layer is and therefore how stable the snow pack is.  Closed captioning included.  (04:03)

Natural World: Himalayas (BBC)
From YouTube, produced by BBC
This is a brief clip (that ends abruptly) of a documentary looking at the wildlife of the most stunning mountain range in the world, home to snow leopards, Himalayan wolves and Tibetan bears. Snow leopards stalk their prey among the highest peaks. Concealed by snowfall, the chase is watched by golden eagles circling above. On the harsh plains of the Tibetan plateau live extraordinary bears and square-faced foxes hunting small rodents to survive. In the alpine forests, dancing pheasants have even influenced rival border guards in their ritualistic displays. Valleys carved by glacial waters lead to hillsides covered by paddy fields containing the lifeline to the East, rice. In this world of extremes, the Himalayas reveal not only snow-capped mountains and fascinating animals but also a vital lifeline for humanity. (01:44)  Narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

Antarctic Ice Movement, Part 1 of 2
From pbslearningmedia.org, produced by PBS
With more than 29 million cubic kilometers (7 million cubic miles) of ice and snow, the Antarctic Ice Sheet is so massive that its weight depresses the underlying crust by 900 meters (nearly 3,000 feet). New snow that collects on the ice sheet's surface causes the ice beneath it to spread out and move along the slope of the land. In this video segment adapted from NOVA, a team of glaciologists carves into one glacier on the East Sheet to monitor the nature and speed of its movement. Closed-captioning included.  (03:33)
