Emperor Penguins are the largest species of penguin
and they live exclusively in Antarctica. These birds stand about 4 feet
tall and are all black with a white patch on their chest which usually
also has hints of yellow. The most amazing thing about these birds is
the commitment they have towards their eggs and their offspring.
Every year, a pair of penguins come together, mate, and once the
female lays the egg; she passes it on to the male. The male penguins
hold the egg on their feet and protect it with a warm fold of skin that
hangs under their bellies. The males then hold the eggs in this position
till then mothers return from their hunt for food. This could last for
days during which time; the male penguins patiently stand bearing the
wing, cold and snow waiting for their mates to return with fish, crabs
and other food.

As per their usual routine, Grinder dug his way out first once the den
door was open and he was followed shortly thereafter by Coola. Once
outside, both bears proceeded to have a good romp in the snow, slide
down the snow hills, clean their coats on the fresh snow and generally
have a good time. After a good wrestle they both were breathing heavy
and ready for a bit of R&R in the snow.

The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is an international satellite mission to provide next-generation observations of rain and snow worldwide every three hours. NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will launch a "Core" satellite carrying advanced instruments that will set a new standard for precipitation measurements from space. The data they provide will be used to unify precipitation measurements made by an international network of partner satellites to quantify when, where, and how much it rains or snows around the world. No trees grow on windswept Ellesmere Island in the northernmost reaches of Canada. But Ohio State University researchers have just discovered signs that things were different millions of years ago in the mummified remains of a forest uprooted in an avalanche. Melting snow cascading off the side of a glacier uncovered broken tree trunks, branches, and even leaves perfectly preserved with their DNA intact. These remains constitute the northernmost mummified plant material ever found in the Canadian Archipelago. They harken back to a time when the Arctic was far warmer than today and offer clues as to how an ancient ecosystem responded to dramatic climate change.
