Space Race: 20th Century Timeline and Firsts
From watchmojo.com, produced by WatchMojo
Humanity has been interested in space exploration for hundreds of years but it was only in the 20th century that it became physically possible. As we continue our space exploration in the new millennium, we are going farther and farther than we've ever been before in our search for knowledge about the worlds and universes beyond. In this WatchMojo.com video, we learn more about the history of space exploration. (5:50)

Space Race (Cold War Period)
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
This video is accompanied by text. "The space race grew out of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. Each of the superpowers wanted to win the race to prove the superiority of not only their technology, but also their own political and social philosophy. On October 4, 1957, Soviet scientists amazed the world by launching into space the first man-made satellite. The nearly 200-hundred-pound Sputnik (Russian for "satellite" or "baby moon") successfully orbited the earth as elated Russians celebrated on the ground. The following month the same team lofted the larger Sputnik II above the earth's atmosphere, this time carrying a dog. The United States, considered by many the world scientific and industrial production leader, had seemingly fallen behind the Soviet Union..." ( Video is well done and professionally produced.)

Challenger Disaster: A Space Flight Tragedy
From watchmojo.com, produced by WatchMojo
One of the most heartbreaking moments in American space travel came on January 28, 1986 when the Challenger Space Shuttle broke apart only 73 seconds into its launch. Killing all seven crew members on board, including the inaugural member of the Teacher in Space project, the tragedy marked the first time multiple lives were lost on an American space flight. Devastating the nation, and the NASA program, the event served to make future space flights safer as regulations were tightened following the catastrophe. (02:32)
