Prior to the 20th century, there had never been national attempt to restrict alcohol production in the America. However, by the end of that century, various groups started pushing for prohibition. Their call was finally heard in 1917 when the Senate proposed an amendment to the constitution. Prohibition went into effect in January of 1920 but this caused many problems. For instance, many people died trying to make alcohol substitutes while others got involved in organized crime.
