This moment in history holds great significance, and today is celebrated throughout the world each year in various ways. Veterans Day Speech to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis by John F. Kelly
From vimeo.com, produced by What So Proudly We Hail
Many American citizens are public-spirited at one time or another, but a remarkable minority of our fellow citizens—our police, firefighters, and military men and women—have made devotion to public safety and well-being their way of life, one that often bears a heavy price. In this (excerpted) speech delivered on November 13, 2010, to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis—an organization supporting U.S. Marines and their families—Lieutenant General John F. Kelly, U.S. Marine Corps (born 1950), commander of the Multinational Force-West in Iraq from 2008 to 2009, pays moving tribute to the heroism of these supreme public servants. He also makes clear the debt that the rest of us owe these dedicated men and women, whose sacrifices make it possible for us to enjoy peace, freedom, and the pursuit of private happiness. He concludes with an account of a most remarkable display of self-sacrifice on the part of two Marines. (Four days before this speech was given, General Kelly’s own son Robert was killed in action on a mission in Afghanistan, during his third tour of duty; another son remained in combat with the Marines.) Watch Eliot A. Cohen (Johns Hopkins) and Raphael Cohen (Georgetown University) discuss the speech with editors Amy and Leon Kass .(43:57)

Post War Tension and Triumph Unit 19
From learner.org, produced by Annenberg Media/Learner.org
This unit examines the tensions of the Cold War era, reflected in
divergent dichotomies: a growing suburban, white, middle-class and
increasingly ghettoized blacks and Latinos; a faith in scientific
progress contrasted with a fear of the bomb; and an idealization of
individualism tempered by an anti-Communist call for conformity.
Individuals and groups raised their expectations for equality as
veterans returned from the global conflict of World War II.

America's Economy Roars in the 1920's
From hippocampus.org, produced by University of California
At the close of World War I, the United States found itself in a recession. Millions of veterans were suddenly looking for jobs at a time when industry was reeling from the cancellation of billions of dollars in war contracts. In addition, shortages of consumer goods that were not produced during the war created high prices and inflation. The cost of living doubled from 1913 to 1920, causing great distress for many Americans. (Video is narrated with slides and speeches.)

'Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crab Cakes Later)' Written by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard and Read Aloud
From YouTube, produced by Sandpiper
Two young girls discover how memories and stories can be found in unlikely places. On Sunday afternoon, two little girls visit their Great-great-aunt Flossie, whose house is full of books, pictures, and "boxes and boxes and boxes of HATS," each of which has a story to go along with it. A woolly winter hat still smelling faintly of smoke was worn by Aunt Flossie when, as a child, she witnessed the great Baltimore fire. The dark blue one with a red feather was perched on her head when, as a young woman, she watched a parade welcoming home black veterans of World War I. These reminiscences paint an interesting portrait of regional African-American history, but the highlight of the book is the girls' favorite story, which features themselves and the day the wind blew Aunt Flossie's best Sunday hat into the river. Based on Howard's memories of her own feisty, 98-year-old aunt, this is a lyrical, entertaining story that rings with authenticity. This is a wonderful literary resource to help build background knowledge in the classroom. (09:35)

VJ Day, Honolulu Hawaii, August 14, 1945: The War is Over
From Vimeo
A three minute video of Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. Students will probably laugh and get a kick out of the outfits, but if you can talk to them about what was going through the minds of these members of the armed forces...going home; alive. Perhaps they could do an interview with some WW Two veterans. There is some scenes of drinking, but very light hearted. And, this is also a primary resource and you could explain the difference between this and "Hollywood" productions. Jimmy Durante is singing I''ll be seeing you, so you may wish to ask them why this song was used. Very rare footage.

March of the Bonus Army - Part 3
From YouTube, produced by Robert Uth
This is the final part of the series on the march on Washington by veterans asking for their bonus money and how the president and others ordered them evicted and burned their occupy Washington settlement. The senators and president accused the veterans of being communist against all evidence that this was not true. This is an excellent video to show students about civil disobedience and how name-calling can be used as a form of propaganda. (07:52)
