This video is accompanied by text. "In 1908, President Teddy Roosevelt could have easily carried his burgeoning popularity to a sweeping victory in the presidential election, but in 1904 he made an impulsive promise not to seek a second elected term. However, he did not intend to completely relinquish control, so he handpicked a successor. Howard Taft, the 350-pound Secretary of War, was chosen as the Republican candidate for 1908. Taft was a mild progressive and an easygoing man that Roosevelt and other Republican leaders felt they could control. Taft easily defeated the Democratic candidate, William Jennings Bryan, and the Socialist candidate, Eugene Debs, in what can be construed as continued public endorsement of Roosevelt..."

This interactive activity featuring videos adapted from the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council, KTOO, and NOVA: "The Big Spill" explains how oil and other environmental contaminants jeopardize the health of animal and human populations along the Alaska coastline. It also features four strategies that the region's residents have developed since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound to safeguard against incidents that may disrupt the local ecosystem: using tugboats to help steer tanker vessels, requiring the use of double-hulled tankers in Alaskan ports, developing near-shore clean-up response tactics in the event of future spills, and contaminant impact studies.

In this video adapted from KTOO, watch as cleanup crews return to the bays and islands of Prince William Sound, Alaska. Before the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker spill, Sleepy Bay, near the village of Chenega Bay, had been used for subsistence living by Alaska Native peoples. Despite cleanup efforts, oil residue remains stuck between and beneath rocks. A crew also visits a tidal lagoon whose sediments had been saturated by oil and where no remediation had been done. Even after 10 years, oil residue remained imbedded on the beach. A crewmember concludes that, while the area was beginning to revive, it would be generations or longer before it returned to its pre-spill state. Closed captioning included. Run time 03:37.

This rap song is based on the poem "Daffodils" by William Wordsworth. It does not follow the poem directly but it does do a good job of making a Romantic poet from over a hundred years ago more accessible to modern students. The video itself is humorous and edited well. Review first for language.

John Green teaches about some of the colonies that were not in Virginia or Massachussetts. Old New York was once New Amsterdam. Before the English got there though, the colony was full of Dutch people who treated women pretty fairly, and allowed free black people to hold jobs. John also discusses Penn's Woods, also known as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was (briefly) a haven of religious freedom, and William Penn dealt relatively fairly with the natives his colony displaced. Of course, as soon as Penn died, the colonists started abusing the natives immediately. We venture as far south as the Carolina colonies, where the slave labor economy was taking shape. John also takes on the idea of the classless society in America, and the beginning of the idea of the American dream. It turns out that in spite of the lofty dream that everyone had an equal shot in the new world, there were elites in the colonies. And these elites tended to be in charge. And then their kids tended to take over when they died. So yeah, not quite an egalitarian paradise. In addition to all this, we get into the Salem Witch Trials, the treatment of women in the colonies, and colonial economics. (11:37)

"Dr. Joseph Warren (June 11, 1741 – June 17, 1775) was an American doctor who played a leading role in American Patriot organizations in Boston in early days of the American Revolution, eventually serving as president of the revolutionary Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Warren enlisted Paul Revere and William Dawes to leave Boston and spread the alarm that the British garrison in Boston was setting out to raid the town of Concord and arrest rebel leaders John Hancock and Samuel Adams."
