Not Right For WatchKnowLearn
WatchKnowLearn ratings are intentionally harsher than what you might find on YouTube, for example. Most of our videos have been imported by people who want to use them with kids, not by the creators of the videos. We take a hard-nosed attitude toward quality. Four and five stars should be reserved for really excellent quality. Three stars isn't bad. Two is often watchable and shouldn't be ruled out.

  • 5 stars = Exemplary.
Unusually helpful and well produced. Do not overuse this, please; it is not the standard rating for decent work, as it is elsewhere.
  • 4 stars = Very Good.
Very helpful but not among the very best; adequately produced, at least.
  • 3 stars = Usable.
Reasonably helpful, perhaps a bit amateurish in production or has some other problem; there is nothing wrong with a 3-star rating for amateur work!
  • 2 stars = Some Merit.
Minimally helpful; not completely worthless or inappropriate; you can see how it might be useful to some people.
  • 1 star = Not Right for WatchKnowLearn.
Not at all helpful, not educational, poorest quality, etc.; you can't see it being useful to anyone.

In this video biography we get a very detailed look into Abraham Lincoln's life.  The video is separated into 10 parts and plays continuously with a short ad between each part.  Part 1 discusses his early life including his childhood and his introduction into politics at the age of 23 (9:15).  Part 2 begins with his early adult life and the different jobs he held, his lonely stand against slavery, his courtship, and ends with the birth of his first son (9:15).  Part 3 covers topics like his nickname, Honest Abe, being a lawyer, the birth of his 2nd son, national politics, and the birth of their 3rd and 4th sons (9:08).  Part 4 discusses slavery as the "Hot Topic" it had become, and the new political party, Republicans (7:27).  In Part 5 we see Lincoln running for President, his election, the succession of the southern states, and the growth of his beard (7:44).  Part 6 shows the Lincolns journey to the White House and the first assassination attempt on his life, and the beginning of the Civil War (8:32).  Part 7 covers Mary Lincoln decorating the White House, Lincoln's 2-man White House staff,  the death of his 3rd son, and the writing of the Emancipation Proclamation (11:18). In Part 8 the video continues to discuss the Civil War, the introduction of black soldiers into the Union army, and the Gettysburg Address (6:53).  Part 9 shows the end of the war, the reelection of Lincoln, the freeing of all slaves, and Freddrick Douglas (8:58).  In the last part of the series we see Lincoln considering giving the newly freed slaves the right to vote, John Wilkes Booth and his road to assassination, Black Easter, the capture and death of all the conspirators, Mary's tortured life after Lincoln's death, and the beginning of the Reconstruction (11:27).

*This video series contains a lot of direct quotes, some of which contains some racial language that is inappropriate for today's society.  So this video has been rated for older students (high school).*
