From YouTube, produced by Between the Lions
In this cartoon video from "Between the Lions," the vowels are going to boot camp. Each vowel ("a", "e", "i", "o", "u", and "y") is dressed in military gear. The drill sergeant calls out "i" and asks for his short and long sound. Then, the video demonstrates when "i" is short in a word and when it is long. The video tells the rule for silent "e" as it builds first the word "rip" and then changes it to "ripe". (01:48)
