In elementary school he said he had a wonderful teacher, he was always doing art in the back of the room. His teachers would always hang up his art around the school. He reflects that his artwork was a huge part of his life. He says authors need to be clear, readers need to know what is going on, it needs to be truthful. He also talks about how the writing comes first and then the illustrations. He uses real pictures to draw the kids in his stories, some are based on kids his son went to school with. He then discusses the social studies series. This series is different than the science adventures, these are about cultures and world history. Ms. Frizzle doesn't use the school bus, but goes on a vacation, and does her own adventures. Another thing they did was to make the books 9 x 12 vertical size and the style of painting is using opaque, bright, flat color, so it has a different look.
