A beauteous rip through the solar sytem, based on NASA's Science on a Sphere program "The Wanderers." "In ancient times, humans watched the skies looking for clues to their future and to aid in their very survival. They soon observed that some stars were not fixed, but moved in the sky from night to night. They called these stars the wanderers." (14:47)

Why isn't Pluto a planet any more? Dr. Robert Hurt explains why Pluto got... well... plutoed. Describes how we define the word planet. Explains when planets were discovered, how asteroids were discovered, and how Pluto was discovered. In early 1990's astronomers found items bigger than Pluto. In August 2006, astronomers from all over the world met and decided on a formal definition of a planet-Pluto didn't make it! It is good to know though that even they make mistakes. Video is of good quality and is appropriate for middle elementary school and middle school students. (03:31)

Thanks to modern technology, today's youngsters grow up knowing more about our sun, planets, and solar system than all the famous philosopher/scientists in history -- Archimedes, Aristotle, Democritus, Copernicus, Galileo, and Sir Isaac Newton. NASA allows us to take a close look at some of our most fascinating neighbors, from the sun to the eight known planets, and beyond to star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies. (07:59)

Neptune
From YouTube, produced by BBC

 |
Excerpt from the 1999 BBC documentary 'The Planets' regarding Voyager 2 flyby of Neptune in 1989. After 12 years in flight, Voyager arrived at Neptune. This video describes what was seen. There are awesome pictures of Neptune taken by Voyager. They saw the deep blue color, dark spot, and white clouds that are on Neptune. They were able to see the complexity of the planet which include strong winds and why they occur. Scientists also noticed Neptune has ring arcs, they are not complete rings and they still don't understand why they aren't complete. This video also took pictures of one of the moons of Neptune, Triton. Triton was really unlike any they had seen before, it was really cold. Awesome pictures and information. Video is of great quality, and appropriate for middle elementary, middle and high school students. (07:28)

Why did Earth thrive and our sister planet, Venus, died? From the fires of a sun's birth... twin planets emerged. Then their paths diverged. Nature draped one world in the greens and blues of life. While enveloping the other in acid clouds... high heat... and volcanic flows. Why did Venus take such a disastrous turn? (22:08)
