Many American citizens are public-spirited at one time or another, but a remarkable minority of our fellow citizens—our police, firefighters, and military men and women—have made devotion to public safety and well-being their way of life, one that often bears a heavy price. In this (excerpted) speech delivered on November 13, 2010, to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis—an organization supporting U.S. Marines and their families—Lieutenant General John F. Kelly, U.S. Marine Corps (born 1950), commander of the Multinational Force-West in Iraq from 2008 to 2009, pays moving tribute to the heroism of these supreme public servants. He also makes clear the debt that the rest of us owe these dedicated men and women, whose sacrifices make it possible for us to enjoy peace, freedom, and the pursuit of private happiness. He concludes with an account of a most remarkable display of self-sacrifice on the part of two Marines. (Four days before this speech was given, General Kelly’s own son Robert was killed in action on a mission in Afghanistan, during his third tour of duty; another son remained in combat with the Marines.) Watch Eliot A. Cohen (Johns Hopkins) and Raphael Cohen (Georgetown University) discuss the speech with editors Amy and Leon Kass .(43:57)

Closeup videography shows loggerhead turtles hatching from eggs laid on the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean coast. They crawl out of the sand toward the glimmering body of water and begin to swim. The newborn turtles swim for safety, avoiding predators by hiding. After 36 hours they arrive in deep water, where they can live well by eating jellyfish and lobster. Scientists have studied dead loggerhead turtles and found that the majority have starved to death after eating undigestible plastic trash that people have dropped into the ocean. A pleasant adult male voice narrates, using descriptive, child-friendly vocabulary; soundtrack includes some musical enhancement. Close-up videography of sea creatures; video does not mention that most loggerheads live on the coasts of Florida, US, which includes the Gulf of Mexico, or that they are also found on the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. In 2010 they are an endangered species.

The spread of capitalism and the social and economic chaos that accompanied the decline of feudalism helped transform medieval Europe into unified nation-states, whose people typically shared common histories, cultures, and languages. As the populace became more organized and less dependent upon feudal ties, the growing urban middle class sought civil and financial order and stability.
To assure the safety of their families and livelihoods, citizens paid taxes in exchange for the services of professional armies raised by the new monarchs. In return, the national governments fostered commerce and trade that benefited the growing middle class and mercantile community. Combined with the other changes Europe was experiencing during the latter Middle Ages, strong central governments also contributed to the age of exploration and discovery.

This video is accompanied by text. "The end of the nineteenth century saw the most contentious and violent labor conflicts in the history of the nation. Between 1881 and 1900, approximately 23,000 strikes occurred, involving over six million workers. Unfortunately, in about half of the strikes the laborers gained nothing, and in the other half they were only able to elicit meager or modest gains. Bloody confrontations wracked the railroad, steel, and mining industries, often requiring intervention with federal troops or local militia.
One of the first great labor conflicts occurred in the early 1870s in the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. Conditions in the coal mines were dangerous, with inadequate safety provisions and ventilation. A group of primarily Irish miners in Pennsylvania organized into a union. The members of this union were called the Molly Maguires..."

There are other segments of this series on WatchKnow. This is the 'Earthquake Country' series which is suitable for middle school and high school students. Through live-action demonstrations and vivid animations, Dr. Pat Abbott explains how earthquakes have shaped the scenery and the character of the greater Los Angeles area. Dr. Abbott shows how faults capable of large earthquakes lie beneath most of the area, posing great risk to the millions of people living in earthquake country. Animations illustrate how and why earthquakes happen, how mountains and valleys have formed as a result, how the ground will shake in large earthquakes, and why this shaking is so destructive to buildings. Dr. Abbott also shows how to evaluate your home for earthquake safety and explains how to reduce the devastating effects of earthquakes. This video is part of Dr. Abbott's "Written in Stone" series.
