Explore the science and beauty of these natural features. Video gives history that the Earth was once an icy ball others believe Earth was cold, but not quite ice. 700 million years ago the Earth was much colder. Volcanoes warmed the surface of the Earth, video shows a volcano that erupted in 2004 where a volcano was filmed erupting through an ice sheet in Central Iceland, this is what would have happened millions of years ago but on a global level. What saved the planet were the tons of carbon dioxide gas. As volcanoes erupted more and more carbon dioxide was released. The layer of carbon dioxide built up and trapped enough heat to end the endless winter. A thaw began and Earth would never be the same. Video is very interesting and is very good quality. Good for elementary grade and middle school students.

"Sun, Rain, Wind, and Snow" is a folk song for children that explains different types of weather. In each verse four characters set out in their balloon to explore all the fun things you can do when it's sunny, rainy, windy, or snowy. This is a great introduction for children to learn about the 4 seasons. ESL teachers can pair the weather words with the season - e.g. "sunny" with "summer", "rainy" with "spring", "windy" with "fall", and "snowy" with "winter". (02:26)

In this video segment adapted from American Experience, explore the North American lands as experienced by the indigenous peoples who migrated through much of the continent. Before the arrival of European settlers, some Native American tribes moved from region to region with the seasons—south in the winter and north in the summer. Following the guidance of their experienced leaders, they obtained the food, water, and other supplies they needed from their surrounding environment.(2:10)

The flag is shown against the blue sky. The yellow field and red symbol colors are the colors of Spain. There is a red sun with rays stretching out from it. There are four groups of rays with four rays in each group. This is an ancient sun symbol of a Native American people called the Zia. They believed the giver of all good gave gifts in groups of four. The gifts are: the four directions - north, east, south and west. Two: the four seasons - spring, summer, fall and winter. Three: the day - sunrise, noon, evening and night. Four: life itself - childhood, youth, middle years and old age. Five: all of these are bound by a circle of life and love, without a beginning or end.

On Groundhog Day, a bunch of men, wearing suits and top hats, pull a groundhog out of a hole in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They then read a scroll the groundhog supposedly wrote, that states whether or not it saw its shadow. This determines if winter will last another six weeks, or if spring is coming soon. It's a bit of an odd tradition, but a similar practice has been taking places for centuries. (03:06)

The Rufous hummingbird is a small wonder that, with respect to body size, migrates farther than any other creature on earth. The brightly colored, feisty bird breeds from southern Alaska to northern California and then spends the winter in Mexico. Though their brains are approximately the size of a grain of rice, Rufous hummingbirds have an excellent memory for locating flowers from year to year. In this video segment from Nature, learn about the little brain and big journey of the Rufous hummingbird. Wonderful example of migration. Run time 02:41.

Read by: Bertram Selwyn (Bernard Shakespeare) "When forty winters shall besiege thy brow, And dig deep trenches in thy beauty's field, Thy youth's proud livery, so gazed on now, Will be a tatter'd weed, of small worth held: Then being ask'd where all thy beauty lies, Where all the treasure of thy lusty days, To say, within thine own deep-sunken eyes, Were an all-eating shame and thriftless praise. How much more praise deserved thy beauty's use, If thou couldst answer 'This fair child of mine Shall sum my count and make my old excuse,' Proving his beauty by succession thine! This were to be new made when thou art old, And see thy blood warm when thou feel'st it cold."

This term gets tossed around at least once every winter for the big snowstorm of the season, and most of the time - it's WRONG! Blizzards have a very specific, difficult set of criteria to meet before they can be categorized as this type of winter storm - and it has more to do with wind and visibility than snow. (01:55)

Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Russia in 1812 is the centerpiece of this six-minute video and deals with its cause and effect. Napoleon Bonaparte had raised the largest army that Europe had ever witnessed and wielded it to conquer much of the European landmass. In 1812, Napoleon's army marched swiftly through Russia,
but couldn't live off the land due to the Russian army's scorched-earth tactics. Eventually, the French reached Moscow, furious to find it deserted and burned to the ground, forcing them to retreat the thousand miles back to France and face the harsh Russian winter. The march resulted in a huge loss of men and ultimately resulted in the destruction of his empire. The video also explains how scientists find evidence of these battles. (06:01)

Another great example of the "winter of our discontent" soliloquy. It would provide a great contrast to other versions as it is set during WWII. Be forewarned that the actual soliloquy doesn't begin until 5.33 seconds into the video. This is the beginning of a film. Enjoy the ambience: jazz age music and dancing dignitaries in the ballroom, then a portion of the speech in the men's room. 1995 film, Richard III (8:29)

This is the movie trailer and could be used as a compare/contrast discussion to the book, or used as an introduction to the book. In this family comedy, Jim Carrey is Mr. Popper, a driven businessman who is clueless when it comes to the important things in life - until he inherits six penguins. Popper's penguins turn his swank New York apartment into a snowy winter wonderland - and the rest of his life upside-down. Filmed on a refrigerated soundstage with real Emperor Penguins, "Mr. Popper's Penguins" is a contemporary adaptation of the classic book. (01:29)

This read-aloud is Te Amo Bebe, Little One written by Lisa Wheeler and illustrated by Maribel Suarez. This sweet story walks through a baby's first year of life through each season. As the seasons change, the infant and mother are shown engaging in a variety of activities including a trip to the beach, dancing to fiesta music at the country fair, and enjoying a winter's night beneath "la luna." The gentle refrain states: "I love you once. I love you twice./I love you more than beans and rice." Spanish words are smoothly incorporated into the text. There is a play button to start story and a pause button on each page. Each word is highlighted as the speaker reads. This is a wonderful resource to help build a literacy rich environment in the classroom. It would be beneficial for struggling readers, ELL students, and/or special education students. Fun story for home too!
