Ever wonder why we have seasons? A lot of people think it's because the Earth gets further away from the sun in winter, and closer in the summer. But, it's actually more interesting than that. In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina talks about how the Earth's tilt is responsible for Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. This first series is based on 5th-grade science. (03:56)

In this video from WPSU’s Outside, a staff member at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center at Penn State University provides tips on backyard bird feeding during the winter. Topics include the selection, placement, and cleaning of feeders. To attract birds for viewing, and to contribute to their welfare, it is important to understand their needs and behaviors. Placing a bird feeder close to a window will prevent collisions with glass. Offering seeds and suet can provide birds with the energy they need to fly. A container can hold clean water, while an electric bird bath heater will keep it from freezing. Closed captioning included. Run time 02:50.

In this video from the WPSU’s series Outside, a staff member at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center at Penn State University explains how being able to identify trees can make a winter walk through the woods more enjoyable. First, you can classify a tree into one of two groups: a conifer that holds its leaves or needles year round, or a deciduous tree that drops leaves annually. Next, observe each tree's characteristics: the type of bark, the branching pattern of a twig, the shape of a bud, and the appearance of fruit or seeds. Closed captioning included. Run time 03:56.

History of Bottle Building - Glass Bottles
Over 25, 000 recycled bottles are ingeniously cemented together to create the Prince Edward Island Bottle Houses, a must-see tourist attraction situated in Cap-Egmont, Prince Edward Island, Canada. They were built by the late Édouard T. Arsenault. He gave birth to these houses after having received a postcard of a glass castle from his daughter in 1979, an attraction she had visited on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. That same summer, he started collecting bottles from his community, mostly from a local restaurant, community dance halls, friends, relatives and neighbours. He spent the winter in the basement of his home, cleaning bottles, removing labels and dreaming of his project.

Each winter, the ice apron that surrounds the continent of Antarctica expands from its summertime area of about 4 million square kilometers (1.5 million sq mi) to 20 million square kilometers (7.5 million sq mi). Although its presence has proven treacherous for would-be explorers and commercial shippers, sea ice provides essential hunting, feeding, and breeding habitats to polar bears, seals, and penguins. It also helps regulate temperature, moisture, and ocean salinity worldwide. In this video segment adapted from NOVA, learn how sea ice forms and how its seasonal fluctuation dramatically changes the continent of Antarctica. Run time 02:35.

These still images of Rembrandt's self-portraits are set to Antonio Vivaldi's 'Winter'. There is no narration or text to eexxplain when they were painted. Rembrandt was a Dutch painter during the "Dutch Golden Age". Rembrandt made many self portraits that showed him as a humble man. He had his students copy them to learn different techniques.

This short video gives excellent real life footage of Mountain Hares displaying courtship and mating rituals. The Mountain Hare has a lighter build than the brown hare, and is easily distinguished by its tail, which is completely white throughout the year, whereas in the brown hare the tail has a black upper surface. The ears are tipped with black, and the coat is brown in summer, turning white during winter. This is a great resource to help build background knowledge and to help make real world connections between nature and the classroom. (0:50)

Kokeshi Dolls originated in North-East Japan as wooden toys for children. They began being produced towards the end of the Edo period (1603~1868) by woodwork artisans, called Kiji-shi, who normally made bowls, trays and other tableware by using a lathe. They began to make small dolls in the winter to sell to visitors who came to bathe in the many hot springs near their villages, which was believed to be a cure for the demands of a strenuous agricultural lifestyle.
